Grade 8 Semester 1: Select EIGHT sketchbook prompts to complete.

Title and date each assignment in the

upper right hand corner of your sketchbook page.

1 Ribbon Values
1. Using a strip of white paper, create a paper ribbon sculpture and place it under a light source to create shadows,
midtones and highlights. You may need to secure the ends with tape or blu tack so it stays spread apart.

You will be drawing your sculpture TWICE on the same page. Plan the layout and decide how you will use your
sketchbook page:
● Will the two objects fit better in portrait or landscape orientation?
● How large should they be, to fit two on the page?

2. Select THREE different coloured colour pencils to represent the shadows, midtones and highlights.
3. In the first drawing, use only the colour you picked for SHADOWS to shade your ribbon sculpture. Change the
pressure of your shading to achieve your value range.
4. In the second drawing, use all three colours to shade in the corresponding values.

2 Object Forms
1. Choose a meaningful object to you.
2. Study it carefully and find three interesting perspectives to draw it from.
3. Plan how you will use the space on your page. You need to fit all three drawings on one page.
4. Use an INK pen and spend 5 minutes per drawing. Set a timer! Stop after 5 minutes and start your next drawing,
even if you are not finished with it.

You are focusing on showing FORM using one or a combination of shading techniques. Your drawings will be more
detailed than what we usually do in class as you have more time per drawing.

No pencil or pre-sketching. If you make a mistake, don’t worry about it and just draw over it or add shading.

3 Juxtaposition Drawing
Create a new object by combining 2 unrelated objects. One needs to be from nature, the other needs to be mechanical.
Render with full shading.
