ADVANCE FIREFIGHTING (AFF)

COURSE SYLLABUS

I. COURSE OVERVIEW
This 4-day course will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions which will cover the following:
Principles involved in controlling firefighting operations on board a vessel and port facilities.
1. Control of firefighting operation aboard ship
2. Organizing and training fire parties
3. Inspection and service of fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment
4. Fire investigation and reporting

II. COURSE OBJECTIVE


To equip maritime personnel with advanced firefighting skills for shipboard environments, covering
fire prevention, detection, and emergency response.

III. COURSE STRUCTURE


Duration: 32 hours (4 days)
Format: Combination of classroom instruction and practical exercises

IV. MODULE BREAKDOWN

Subjects Covered Duration


Module 1: Fire Science and Marine Fire Hazards 6 hrs
▪ Basics of combustion, types of marine fires, fire triangle, fire
behavior in confined spaces, and ship-specific hazards.
Module 2: Fire Prevention and Detection Systems 6 hrs
▪ Overview of fire protection (passive and active), detection systems,
alarm protocols, and maintenance.
Module 3: Firefighting Equipment and Techniques 8 hrs
▪ Covers equipment types, operation, and techniques (e.g., direct /
indirect attack), use of PPE, and tactics for various compartments
on ships.
Module 4: Firefighting Drills and Simulations 8 hrs
▪ Emphasizes realistic drills, evacuation procedures, emergency team
roles, communication, and post-fire analysis.
Module 5: Fire Safety Management 4 hrs
▪ Focus on international safety regulations, fire safety plans, risk
assessment, training, and response planning.

V. METHODOLOGY
In conducting this course, different training methodologies will be utilized to enhance participants’
learning experience using the latest Accelerated Learning (AL) techniques, interactive presentation,
videos, and ice-breakers. Workshops and challenging practical exercises will be introduced to give
participants the opportunity to apply theories they have learned from the course.
Theory Session/Lectures: Theoretical knowledge will be imparted through interactive lectures.
Practical Exercises: Hands-on training will be conducted using firefighting equipment and simulation
scenarios.
Case Studies: Real-world fire incidents will be analyzed to understand the factors involved and lessons
learned.
Group Discussions: Participants will engage in group discussions to share experiences and knowledge.
Assessment: (a) Written Examination – a written examination will assess theoretical knowledge, (b)
Practical Assessment – Participants will be evaluated on their ability to use firefighting equipment and
respond to simulated fire scenarios.
Participation: Active participation in discussions and practical exercises will be considered.
Certification: Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of
completion.
