Unseen Workshop
Unseen Workshop
In this common module students deepen their understanding of how texts represent
individual and collective human experiences. They examine how texts represent human
qualities and emotions associated with, or arising from, these experiences. Students
appreciate, explore, interpret, analyse and evaluate the ways language is used to shape
these representations in a range of texts in a variety of forms, modes and media.
Students explore how texts may give insight into the anomalies, paradoxes and
inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations, inviting the responder to see the
world differently, to challenge assumptions, ignite new ideas or reflect personally. They
may also consider the role of storytelling throughout time to express and reflect particular
lives and cultures. By responding to a range of texts they further develop skills and
confidence using various literary devices, language concepts, modes and media to
formulate a considered response to texts.
Key Steps
1. Identify the experience (relationships, loss, hardship, isolation)
2. Answer the question e.g. how? (the vehicle through which the experience is shown)
E.g. The composer explores the complexity of human experiences through depicting the
inconsistencies in communication within relationships.
Effective Analysis
2. Find QTEs that support your argument
e.g. the composer showcases how the persona values technology and instant communication over the natural world and traditional
forms of connection.
2. Identify simple techniques to back up your idea sentence - DON’T LOOK FOR COMPLICATED TECHNIQUES
- Could be as simple as syntax, tone, visual imagery etc…
NOTE: remember the number of marks should be an indicator for how many QTE’s to provide e.g. (3 - 1 = 2 QTE’s)
e.g. QTE (1) = "I need to google a map, text someone who will reconnect me" – High modality language (e.g., "need") emphasizes
the persona's dependence on technology for connection, showing they value instant communication over their natural surroundings.
QTE (2) = "How can a message washed up in an old bottle compare to my new slate black iPhone?" – Juxtaposition contrasts
traditional communication (message in a bottle) with modern technology (iPhone), highlighting the persona's preference for the
immediacy and efficiency of digital devices.
FULL RESPONSE:
The persona's values are revealed through their dependence on technology for
connection and their disregard for the natural world. This is evident through the
use of high modal language in, "I need to google a map, text someone who will
reconnect me," emphasizes the persona's reliance on instant communication and
digital tools, indicating that they value the convenience of technology over the
natural world. Furthermore, by juxtaposing, "a message washed up in an old
bottle” to the persona’s “new slate black iPhone" the stark contrast between
traditional, slower forms of communication and modern technology is shown.
Thus, the persona values the efficiency and immediacy of their phone over the
natural and more symbolic methods of connection, reinforcing their preference for
the digital world over the tangible, natural elements around them.
Compare how texts 3 and 4 reveal how challenging experiences can ignite
new ideas and perceptions. (6 marks)
- For compare questions, make sure to balance the textual evidence from both
texts and always remember to link to your overall idea sentence
- For this question your structure should look something like this:
1. Idea statement - Answer the question!
2. QTE (1)
3. QTE (2)
4. QTE (3)
5. QTE (1)
6. QTE (2)
7. QTE (3)
