Work Experience and Extra-Curricular Document

Firstly, I would like to explain what work experience and extra-curricular is and why you
should seek to acquire this.

Work Experience is where a company will give you an opportunity to foresee the
operations and practise some tasks that their employees will undergo on a regular
basis. This is a fantastic way to explore different industries and positions. It is also a
brilliant chance to showcase to universities and employers that you are proactive and
interested in the field.

Extra-Curricular are endeavours that provide you the skills and knowledge that
employees and universities want to see. These require a lot more independent work.
Many people often neglect this and therefore are costing themselves advantages in
future competition stages.

Linkedin
Linkedin is a social media app that allows you to network with like-minded people.
Networking is the act of connecting with professionals in similar posts to you in pursuit
of grasping knowledge as well as opportunity. I heavily recommend you download this
app if you haven't done so already as it will advertise to you the opportunities that will
benefit you going forward.

I recommend connecting with other students that are aspiring to be in the same
professions as you. This will be a great way of understanding what kind of work
experience and extra-curricular you should acquire as well as introduce you to new
companies that you may not have heard.

How do you attain work experience and extra-curricular?

The most common way of attaining work experience is through applying on company
websites and job advertisements. Another way is through emailing/calling companies
that you want to have experience with. Often, they will ignore you however with
resilience you will eventually meet a company that will be willing to offer you work
experience. Asking friends and family that work in an industry that you are interested in
would also be a good shout.
Volunteering is also another way getting work experience, although less common some
companies may give you the opportunity to volunteer for them. In some cases, some
smaller firms may even offer you part-time jobs e.g. Real Estate agents often have
young people working in an administrative role, this then can be a way for you to step
your foot in the door per say and get some industry insight and you could even work
your way up in the firm. I do recommend you ask for these opportunities, although it
may seem rather daunting to ask it is worth a try.
Extra-Curricular
This is certainly more complicated than work experience. However, these are game-
changing when it comes to applications and Interviews. There are many forms of extra-
curricular in the context of career development. These can include:

Essay writing competitions

• University/Company Programs
• Olympiads
• Research papers
• Projects
• Small businesses
• Courses and certifications
• Joining charities and NGOs as a Board Advisor or Brand ambassador
• Mentorship
• Joining your local political party and council

These are the main pursuits that I recommend, however there may others that you think
of, and I do recommend you do this. Again, I highly advise you use Linkdln to search for
these opportunities.

I will now link organizations that can aid you in your pursuit of enhancing your
employability.

There are hundreds of more companies that are offering work experience, just keep
searching.
Getting involved with organizations: many organizations are looking for young people to
help with their operations. This could be the Youth Parliament, European Youth
Parliament, your local council, other charities such as
https://theirworld.org/projects/global-youth-ambassadors/. There are many others,
again I of recommend researching this.

To conclude I would like to say please do not try do everything that is available. Pick as
many things that are sustainable and think that will aid you in your development and
your chosen career path. As much as this is important do not prioritize this over your
grades. Your grades are certainly the biggest factor in your employability. A recruiter for
Goldman Sachs Investment Bank quoted that he values A-level almost as much as a
degree. This is because we are all siting the same exam.
