Experiment 1
Experiment 1
APPARATUS- Measuring cylinder, spring balance, water, a metal ball and thread.
THEORY- Archimedes principal states that when a body is completely or partially immersed in
a liquid, it experiences an upthrust or buoyant fore which is equal to the weight of the liquid
displaced by the immersed part of the body.
Upthrust = Weight of the liquid displaced by the body.
Upthrust is also equal to the apparent loss in weight of the body in the liquid. Thus we can
conclude that
=
Apparent loss in weight of the body Weight of the liquid displaced by the
body’s when immersed in liquid immersed part W2
W1
W1−W2
R.D = W1= Weight of the body in air,
W2= Weight of the body in liquid.
PROCEDURE-
Attach the metal ball to the spring balance using the thread and find its weight by
suspending it in air. Note this weight as W1.
Take the measuring cylinder (around 100 ml capacity) and fill it of its height.

3
Immerse the same metal ball hanging from the spring balance into the water in the
measuring cylinder. Note the new reading on the spring balance (W2) i.e. the weight of
the object when immersed in water.
