I. Electric Field
The electric field is the space around an electrical charge

 Gravitational forces are far weaker than electric forces.

• The electric field describes the amount of force per coulomb of charge.
The equation for electric field strength:
E = Fe /q
Where:
E = electric field unit Newton/Coulomb (N/C)
F = electric force unit Newton (N)
q0 = positive test charge unit Coulomb (C )
E is a vector quantity
Direction indicated by small + test charge
Combining with E=F/q and Coulomb’s Law

Electric field can be also computed by

E=KQ
r2
Where:
E = electric field (N/C)
Q = central charge (C )
K = 9 x109 N.m2/C2
r= distance ( m)

Example1 to calculate the electric field

A charge of 3 x10-6 C is used to test the electric field of a central charge of 6C that
causes a force of 800N. What is the magnitude of the electric field?
G: qo = 3 x 10-6 C
F = 800N or 8 x102 N
R: E = ___
E: E = F/ qo
S: E = 8 x 102 N/ 3 X10-6 C =
A: 2.7 x108 N/C

Assessment #1
Problem solving: Use GRESA method
1. A small charge 6.0 micro Coulomb (uC) is found in a uniform field 2.9 N/C.
Determine the force on the charge.
1C
G: q0 = 6.0uC x = 6 x 10-6C or 0.000006C, E = 2.9 N/C
1000000uC
R: Fe = ___N
E: Fe = E q
S: Fe = (2.9N/C)(6 x 10-6C) = 1.74 x 10-5 N or 0.0000174N
A: Fe = 1.74 x 10-5 N or 0.0000174N
2. Find the electric field acting on a 2 C charge if an electrostatic force of 10,500 N acts
on the particle.
G: q0 = 2C, Fe = 10,500N
R: E = ___N/C
E: E = F/q0
S: E = 10,500N / 2C = 5,250 N/C
A: E = 5,250 N/C
3. If the intensity of the electric field at point P is -3.5 × 10 -4 N/C, what is the magnitude
of the electric force acting on an electron at P? (Electrons have a charge of -1.6× 10 -19
C)
G: q0 = -1.6 x 10-19C, E = -3.5 x 10-4N/C
R: Fe = ___N
E: Fe = E q
S: Fe = (-3.5 x 10-4N/C)( -1.6 x 10-19C) = 5.6 x 10-23N
A: Fe = 5.6 x 10-23N

III. Answer Briefly:

1. What is the difference between series and parallel circuit?
In a series circuit, there is only on current pathway and all components have the same
current through them. It follows that if there is a break in any part of the circuit, no
current flows. On the other hand, parallel circuit have more than one current pathway
and all components have the same potential difference across them. Each component
acts as if it were the only one present, a break in one circuit doesn’t affect the others.

2. Show an illustration of a series and parallel circuit.
