1.3.5.2 The VHF-2100 does not support the VDL Mode 3 Anti-blocking
over-ride functionality speciÞed in DO-271B section 2.2.4
and, more speciÞcally, DO-224A section 3.3.5.4.3.5. The
Þrst portion of the requirement speciÞes a transmit inhibit to
prevent users from talking over other users already speaking
on the Mode 3 channel (anti-blocking). The second portion
of the requirement speciÞes that this inhibit be allowed to
be over-ridden when other users are in a degraded VDL
Mode 3 timing state (TS2 or TS3). The VHF-2100 has the
ability to detect what timing state other aircraft transmissions
are in, however, there is no provision for communicating
this information to the ßight crew. Furthermore, there is no
provision for the ßight crew to command the anti-blocking
over-ride.
1.3.5.3 TSO C163 Paragraph 4e recommends marking the unit
nameplate with “(Dev)” when any deviations to the TSO are
granted. Rockwell Collins decided not to mark the VHF-2100
nameplate in this manner as this could lead to confusion
with the end user. The marking “(Dev)” may be construed
as "Development" rather than "Deviation" and may lead the
end user to question the utility of the product. All deviations
are documented in this Component Maintenance Manual, as
required by TSO C163 Paragraphs 5b and 5j. This supplies the
end user with the appropriate information and is the method
used in all prior TSO approvals of this type of product.
1.3.6 TSO Plus+ Functionality Full TSO qualiÞcation testing was performed on all
implemented functions covered by TSO. For functions not
covered by a TSO, qualiÞcation testing was performed to the
applicable performance standard, per TSO Plus+ guidance.
SpeciÞcally, Mode A and Mode 2 functionality was tested to the
DO-281 MOPS performance standard.

TASK 23-12-95-870-805-A01
5. Electrical Description

SUBTASK 23-12-95-870-001-A01
A. General

(1) The VHF-2100 VHF Transceiver supplies air-to-air and air-to-ground communications
in the 118.000 to 136.992 MHz frequency band. Electrical connections to the VHF
antenna and other related equipment are made through the unit's rear connector.
The VHF-2100 contains the transmitter, receiver, control and data processing circuits
necessary to perform conventional analog radio and data link functions (ARINC 750)
with a compatible CMU.

(2) The paragraphs that follow describe the electromagnetic interference capabilities of the
VHF-2100 VHF Transceiver and a electronic circuit functional description for each
assembly.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-870-002-A01
B. Electromagnetic Interference

(1) The VHF-2100 is designed to operate aboard aircraft that use either conventional
control systems or ßy-by-wire control systems, or any combination of both. Fly-by-wire
control systems are required to be immune to HIRF, lightning, and FM broadcasts to
prevent navigation and ßight control equipment failures.

(a) High Intensity Radiated Fields (HIRF)

1 HIRF is any radiated Þeld that has an energy level above 5 volts per meter and
is either a one time occurrence (spike or pulse) or recurrent frequencies in the
range 30 Hz to 18 GHz. Sources of HIRF include radar (ground based and
airborne) and on-board transients from motors and other electrical equipment.

2 There are three categories of HIRF immunity.

a Flight critical equipment must be able to survive without damage and

operate properly in an environment of 200 volts per meter conducted or
radiated, and 600 volts per meter pulsed.

b Flight essential equipment must be able to survive in an environment of 200

volts per meter without damage, and operate properly in an environment
of 20 volts per meter.

c Flight nonessential equipment must be able to survive without damage and

operate properly in an environment of 5 volts per meter.

Page 23

ROCKWELL COLLINS
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL with IPL
VHF-2100, PART NO 822-1287

(b) Lightning

1 Lightning creates a very high-level-pulse radiated Þeld, and also produces high
current and thermal energy. When a direct lightning strike to the aircraft occurs,
high current ßows through the aircraft skin and exterior equipment such as
antennas. The high current causes voltage spikes or pulses to be induced in
the internal aircraft wiring. A lightning strike also generates high temperatures
at the point of contact because of the high current involved. When ßying in an
environment where lightning strikes are possible, exterior equipment must be
able to endure the heat caused by the lightning strike. Internal equipment must
be able to maintain proper functions during the resulting lightning-induced
pulses.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-800-001-A01
C. Electromagnetic Interference Protection

(1) The HIRF and lightning protection of the equipment is accomplished by using Þltering
networks for each input into the nickel-plated rear connector. The networks are
composed of a ferrite block or beads and feed-through capacitors. The reduction of
cooling-hole size reduces the potential for HIRF entrance into the equipment. HIRF
interference is further minimized through the use of metallized gaskets at the seams
where side covers and top, bottom, front, and rear panels join.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-870-003-A01
D. Chassis

(1) The chassis assembly gives support for the circuit cards, and a plenum to force cooling
air across the circuits. RF cables and wiring are routed through the chassis to provide
interconnect wiring between circuit cards.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-800-002-A01
E. VHF RF A1

(1) VHF RF A1 contains the radio frequency (RF) functions. These functions include:
transmitter, receiver, LO synthesizers, and Þltering circuits. This circuit card assembly
contains receiver circuits that convert the VHF carrier frequency to an intermediate
frequency (IF) and frequency synthesizers. The transmitter circuits consist of a
frequency synthesizer circuit, power ampliÞer circuits and monitor circuits.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-800-003-A01
F. DSP/Power Supply A2

(1) The digital signal processor (DSP) circuit of A2 digitally samples, Þlters and demodulates
the IF input from A1, supplies the baseband signals for transmitter modulation, and
controls all other operations of the transceiver.

Page 24
23-12-95 Jun 06/05
ROCKWELL COLLINS
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL with IPL
VHF-2100, PART NO 822-1287

(2) The power supply function converts the nominal +28 V dc input to DC voltages that are
necessary for the unit to operate.

(3) The external I/O circuits supply an interface between the rear connector and other
functional analog-to-digital (A/D) circuits within the unit. The I/O circuits consists of:
ARINC 429 receivers, ARINC 429 transmitters, transmitter audio input, receiver audio
outputs and discrete inputs/outputs.

SUBTASK 23-12-95-870-004-A01
G. Rear Interconnect A3

(1) Rear interconnect A3 contains the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and high intensity
radiated Þeld (HIRF) Þltering and protection for signals entering the unit. A view of the
rear connector and rear connector pin assignments is given in Figure 4/GRAPHIC
23-12-95-99B-004-A01. A description of the rear connector pin functions is given in
Table 7/Table 23-12-95-99A-008-A01.

DOCUMENT FOR ARINC 600 CONNECTORS, REQUIRES (FOR
PROPER CONNECTOR OPERATION AND SERVICE LIFE) THAT AN
EXTRACTOR MECHANISM BE USED TO AID DISENGAGEMENT
AND ALSO THAT A FRAMEWORK BE USED IN THE AIRCRAFT
SO THAT ONLY A ±0.1 INCH LATERAL MOVEMENT, AND ONLY 0.2
INCH VERTICAL MOVEMENT IS POSSIBLE.

CAUTION: ROCKWELL COLLINS RECOMMENDS THAT CARE BE EXERCISED DURING

REMOVAL OF LRUS FROM THEIR MOUNTS FOR ANY INSTALLATION
THAT IS NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE ARINC SPECIFICATION.

(1) Damage of the plastic insert of the aircraft rack connector for ARINC 600 avionics
equipment is possible during extraction of the LRU. A signiÞcant amount of force is
necessary to disengage the ARINC 600 connector that interfaces the LRU with the
aircraft rack. Excessive side-to-side or up-and-down motion can cause the plastic insert
of the LRU receptacle to become damaged.

(2) The paragraphs that follow gives general installation information for the VHF-2100
VHF Transceiver.

B. System Requirements

(1) The VHF-2100 VHF Transceiver has the capability to interface with VDL systems
as well as support analog voice and data operations. The system conÞguration
and interfaces are dependent upon the aircraft, installed systems and customer
requirements. A simpliÞed block interconnect diagram is shown in Figure 6/GRAPHIC
23-12-95-99B-006-A01. This diagram shows a typical VHF communications subsystem
supporting multi-mode VHF communication operation. Other components in this system
include: a radio tuning panel (RTP), a microphone, a headset or speaker system,
a data control/display and an aircraft antenna. An optional onboard maintenance
system (OMS) is also shown in the diagram. An interconnect wiring diagram for a
typical VHF communications transceiver system is shown in Figure 7/GRAPHIC
23-12-95-99B-007-A01.

(2) Interconnect Cable Preparation

(a) Observe the following precautions during design and preparation of interconnect
wiring cables.

• Bond and shield all parts of the aircraft electrical system, such
as generators and ignition systems.
• Keep the connecting cables away from circuits carrying heavy current,
equipment transmitting pulses, or other sources of interference.
• Make all external connections of the equipment through designated
connectors, listed on the interconnect wiring diagram.
• Digital data bus shields should be grounded to the aircraft structure
at both ends and on both sides of all breaks.
• The audio cable shield should be grounded at the audio system end only.
• Leave slack in cables to allow for free sway of the equipment. Avoid
long runs of wire insofar as practicable.
• For all twisted and shielded bus wires, make shield grounds at the electronics
rack shelf-interconnect points and at production breaks.
• Separate AC and DC grounds should be provided. DC grounds
may be individual local grounds.
• Connect primary power to the components through aircraft circuit breakers
(of the appropriate size) as shown in the interconnect wiring diagrams.
• After installation of the cabling and before installation of the equipment,
perform a continuity check of all interconnect wiring. When the check
is completed, apply power and ensure that voltage is present at the
pins speciÞed by the interconnect wiring diagram.
