I’m was thinking about calling the series on odd tools to the trade
something like “Cheating Tricks to Corvettes” and my intention
was to do one large book. However, I think that adding these to
the site will benefit all who find them and if they are singled in
this help section they can be found easily. Over the years of
working on Corvettes you tend to learn a few cheat tricks that
make the job easier. Some of these tools you will look at and
think OMG, yeah.. that will work! Some you’ll question and
some are just down right ugly.

We’ll start this off with the front spring compressor!

One feared job on any Car is the front spring compressor! The old style
compressors function but they can be very hard to remove from the spring
once it’s installed in the car. A quick way to install springs in your car
(1963-1982) with little output to your pocket is to use 5/8” all thread rod.
You’ll also find this tool handle for changing out the upper A-Arm bumper
since the upper arm will become loose on the car when the spring is drawn
down.

The all thread is inserted through the top of the spring tower through the
spring and in to the lower A-Arm. At the bottom of the A-Arm is a flat 3/8”
stock steel plate. This plate has one simple hole drilled in it.

What you’ll need:

1 section of 5/8” All thread
1 Steel 3/8” Plate cut to size
2 Nuts, three washers (two on top)

Next up, the rear sway bar bushing installation tool!

Have you ever tried to install bushings in a rear trailing arm while it’s on the car? If so
then you know it’s not an easy job to do!
