QUESTION 01

a. State what is dew point temperature?

b. Mention whether dry bulb temperature and dew point temperature can be identical
under some conditions of air. If so mentioned that atmospheric condition.

c. A room consists with air at 20˚C temperature, 85% relative humidity and 85kpa total
pressure. It is given that saturation pressure of water vapour at 20˚C is 2.3392kPa.
Determine the partial pressure, and specific humidity of dry air of this room.

d. Atmospheric air at 35˚C flows steadily into an adiabatic saturation device and leaves as
a saturated mixture at 25˚C. Makeup water is supplied to the device at 25˚C.
Atmospheric pressure is 98 kPa. Determine the relative humidity and specific humidity
of the air (i.e air entering the device). It is given that the enthalpy and the specific
humidity of air leaving the device are 78.11 kJ/kg of dry air and 0.02079 kgH2O/kg dry
air respectively. Further, enthalpy of make up water is given as 104.83kJ/kg. Consider
enthalpy and saturated water pressure of air at 35˚C are 77.66kJ/kg and 5.6291kPa
respectively.

QUESTION 02

a. The figure Q2 describes the heat transfer mechanism through a wall with usual
notations. Using the information given in the figure derive an equation for heat transfer
rate through this wall.

Figure Q2: Heat transfer mechanisms through a wall

b. Using the equation for heat transfer rate obtain an equation for overall heat transfer
coefficient.

c. A warehouse having dimension of 10m x 5m x 3m (Length x width x Height) has the

walls constructed as per the specifications given in the Table Q2. Consider outdoor
temperature as 48˚C and the indoor temperature is maintained at 25˚C using an air
conditioner. Neglecting the openings such as doors and windows and the effects of
radiation and convection heat transfer, calculate the heat transfer rate through these
walls.
If it is proposed to add 5cm thickness polystyrene layer at the outer surface of this wall,
calculate the percentage reduction in heat gain due to this suggestion. Assume thermal
conductivity of the polystyrene as 0.08W/m.K .

Table Q2: Construction of the wall from outer surface to inner surface

Layer number Material Thickness of the Thermal conductivity

from outdoor layer (cm) of the material
(W/m.K)
1 Plaster 2 1.00
2 EPS 4 0.05
3 Thermo-stone 24 0.30
4 Gypsum 2 0.80

QUESTION 03

a. State the four indoor environmental factors that mostly influenced to the occupant’s
health and welfare. Out of the four factors mentioned, state the factors that can be
controlled through ventilation and air conditioning.

b. Define the term “thermal comfort”. State the two numerical methods used to predict
thermal comfort.

c. Briefly explain the importance of maintaining indoor air quality.

Note: you shall highlight at least three factors.

d. State the basic methods which could be used to control indoor air quality and give an
practical examples which those methods have been implemented.

QUESTION 04

a. State the equations with usual notation for COP of air conditioning machines that
operate on vapour compression refrigeration cycle and vapour absorption refrigeration
cycle.

b. State basic differences of air conditioners that operate on vapor compression

refrigeration cycle and vapour absorption refrigeration cycle.

c. Name four basic components that can be seen in a water-cooled chilled water central air
conditioning system. Briefly explain the basic function or operation of each of the
component that you have mentioned.

d. Identify three energy saving points of a water-cooled chilled water central air
conditioning system and explain suitable energy saving strategies which could be
applied at each point.
