PART – C

1. Two forces of magnitudes 3P, 2P respectively acting at a point have a resultant R. If the
first force is doubled, the magnitude of the resultant is doubled. Find the angle between
the forces.

2. Two equal weights of 10 N are attached to the ends of a thin string which passes over
three smooth pegs in a wall arranged in the form of an equilateral triangle with one side
horizontal. Find the pressure on each peg.
3. A particle is acted upon by the following forces :
(i) A pull of 8 N due North East ;
(ii) A pull of 10 N due North ;
(iii) A pull of 12 N due East ;
(iv) A pull of 4 N in a direction inclined 60° South of West ;
(v) A pull of 6 N in a direction inclined 30° East of South.
Find graphically the magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

4. Determine analytically the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the following four
forces acting at a point :
(i) 10 N pull N 30° E ; (ii) 12.5 N push S 45° W ;
(iii) 5 N push N 60° W ; (iv) 15 N push S 60° E.
5. The forces 20 N, 30 N, 40 N, 50 N and 60 N are acting at one of the angular points of a
regular hexagon, towards the other five angular points, taken in order. Find the
magnitude and direction of the resultant force.
6. Two cables are tied together at C and loaded as shown. Determine the tension (a) in cable
AC, (b) in cable BC
7. A sailor is being rescued using a boatswain’s chair that is suspended from a pulley that
can roll freely on the support cable ACB and is pulled at a constant speed by cable CD.
Knowing that α = 30° and β = 10° and that the combined weight of the boatswain’s chair
and the sailor is 200 lb, determine the tension (a) in the support cable ACB, (b) in the
traction cable CD
8. A rectangular plate is supported by three cables as shown. Knowing that the tension in
cable AB is 408 N, determine the components of the force exerted on the plate at B
9. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Determine the vertical force P exerted
by the balloon at A knowing that the tension in cable AD is 481 Ν.
10. The lines of action of three forces concurrent at the origin pass respectively through
points A (2, -2, 4) m, B (3, 0,-3) m, C (-1, 2, 4) m. The magnitudes of these forces are 3
kN, 1 kN and 4 kN respectively. Find the magnitude and direction of their resultant.
11. A transmission tower is held by three guy wires attached to a pin at A and anchored by
bolts at B, C, and D. If the tension in wire AB is 840 lb, determine the vertical force P
exerted by the tower on the pin at A.
12. For the cable system as shown, determine the tension in each cable knowing that P =
2880 N and Q = 0.
13. Three wires are connected at point D, which is located 18 in. below the T-shaped pipe
support ABC. Determine the tension in each wire when a 180-lb cylinder is suspended
from point D as shown.
14. Three cylinders weighting 100 N each and of 80 mm diameter are placed in a channel of
180 mm width as shown in Fig. Determine the pressure exerted by (i) the cylinder A on
B at the point of contact (ii) the cylinder B on the base and (iii) the cylinder B on the wall
15. An electric light fixture weighing 15 N hangs from a point C, by two strings AC and BC.
The string AC is inclined at 60° to the horizontal and BC at 45° to the horizontal as shown
in Fig.

16. A light string ABCDE whose extremity A is fixed, has weights W1 and W2 attached to it
at B and C. It passes round a small smooth peg at D carrying a weight of 300 N at the free
end E as shown in Fig. If in the equilibrium position, BC is horizontal and AB and CD
make 150° and 120° with BC, find (i) Tensions in the portion AB, BC and CD of the string
and (ii) Magnitudes of W1 and W2.
17. Two spheres A and B weighing 100 N and 75 N respectively and with the corresponding
radii 75 mm and 50 mm are placed in a container as shown in Fig. Determine the support
reactions.
