Lesson 5 Geometric Sequence
Lesson 5 Geometric Sequence
Objectives
• The learner can differentiate a geometric sequence
from an arithmetic sequence; and
• determine the nth term of a geometric sequence.
Find the ratio of the second number to the first number.

A sequence is geometric if there exist a number 𝑟, called
the common ratio.
The common ratio, 𝑟 can be determined by dividing any
term in the sequence by the term that precedes it.

The nth term of a geometric sequence is
given by
𝒏−𝟏
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 (𝒓) ,𝒓 ≠ 𝟎
where 𝑎1 is the first term and r is the common
ratio.

Example 5
Write the first three terms of the geometric sequence
which nth term is given by 𝒂𝒏 = 𝟒 −𝟓 𝒏−𝟏
Solution:
𝑛−1 𝑛−1
𝑎𝑛 = 4 −5 𝑛−1 𝑎𝑛 = 4 −5 𝑎𝑛 = 4 −5
𝑎1 = 4 −5 1−1 𝑎2 = 4 −5 2−1 𝑎3 = 4 −5 3−1
