Making Ice Lab Name:

Period:
Date:

Background: We have learned that water freezes at 0°C. Note: salt lowers the freezing point of
water. In this lab you will investigate how to freeze water using a salt and ice mixture.

Materials:
 Thermometer
 Beaker
 Test tube
 Ice
 Rock salt
 Water
 Stopwatch
 Plastic spoon

Procedures:
1. Fill a 400 mL beaker half full with ice, and then add 100 mL of water.
2. Take the temperature of the ice-water mixture in the beaker. Record in data table #1.
3. Add 5 spoonfuls of rock salt to the beaker and gently stir with a spoon.
4. After a few minutes take the temperature of the ice-water-salt mixture and record in data
table #1.
5. Put 5 mL of room temperature water into a test tube. Take the temperature and record in
data table #1.
6. Set the test tube into the beaker of salt and ice water.
7. Once the test tube is in the beaker start the stopwatch. Record the temperature of the
water in the test tube every 30 seconds in data table #2.
8. While collecting data continue to stir the ice mixture in the beaker and gently move the
probe around inside the test tube.
9. Continue collecting data for 15 minutes or until the water in the test tube is completely
frozen into ice.
10. Now that the water has turned into ice record the final temperature of the water in data
table #1.
11. Graph the data (time on x-axis and temperature on y-axis). Instead of using a best fit line,
connect your dots.
12. When you are finished, place the thermometer and ice in a beaker of warm water to melt
the ice.
