Calbayog: Artist’s Cradle

Calbayog City is famous for its appreciation of culture and the arts.
Calbayog’s fiesta is a celebration of its culture through various artistic
activities, highlighting the abundance of creativity and aesthetics of the
people of Calbayog. With its promotion of the arts, the city became the
center of the arts and culture of Eastern Visayas. Several artists known in
the country cme from Calbayog City.
One of the most popular artists from Calbayog is Chito S. Roño. He is a
film writer, producer, and director. He is known for his non-traditional vision
and special effects which led him to earn awards including the Gawad Urian
Awards and the Metro Manila Film Festival Award for Best Director.
Calbayog is also home to many talented visual artists. Considered the
most famous among the local painters, Raul Isidro, is a multi-awarded
painter and contemporary artist. He has held art exhibitions in the
Philippines and other countries such as Germany, Israel, Spain, and the
United States. Despite his age, he continues to share his time promoting art
and inspiring the younger generation of artists.
The rise and success of local artists were started and inspired by Jose
Cinco Gomez, a composer who later became known as “the music man of
Samar”. He is considered the most prolific composer of Samar songs. He
spent most of his life composing songs to give life and pride to the music
industries of Calbayog and Samar, thus earning the title “Maestro”. He wrote
the lyrics and composed the music for the song “Calbayog” which later
became the official hymn of the city. “Calbayog” is the legacy of Jose Gomez.
Roño, Isidro, and Gomez are only three of the brightest artists in
Calbayog City. There are hundreds more who were born and raised in the
city. They continue to showcase the rich artistry of Calbayog City.
