This Customer Information serves to inform you about the


importance to monitor the emergency stop system regularly. Emergency Stop System /
Previous Customer Information letters no. 231, 299 and 375 Automatic-Self-Test-Loop
informed and advised our customers to make sure that the
proper function of the complete emergency stop system is
ensured.
MAN Energy Solutions
To avoid a failing emergency stop, which can lead to major
engine breakdown (e.g. overspeed event) a control of the PrimeServ Customer Information
emergency stop valve (including the magnetic coil) has to be PCI No. 444 / November 2022
carried out. Especially before engine start, the proper function
of the emergency stop system has to be ensured.
Concerns
MAN Energy Solutions SE therefore kindly wants to remind
Medium-speed engines produced by
you about the check-ups and the importance of a proper
MAN Energy Solutions with conventional
working emergency stop system and introduce the Automatic- injection system
Self-Test-Loop (ASTL).

The monitoring of the emergency stop system is achieved


through the ASTL functionality and no further tests or controls
are required for a safe and smooth engine start. The ASTL is
applicable to almost all engine control and monitoring
systems.

Implementation of the automatic self-test-loop


(ASTL)

The ASTL consists of a software upgrade for the safety &


control system and is implementable into your existing
system. Depending on the control system design, the ASTL
function may need to be engineered.

Advantage of this software upgrade is that it is fully automatic


and safe for the engine operators, because the engine start
will be only released after the emergency stop system shows
to be fully functional.

Upgrade possibility

For an upgrade, we kindly ask you to contact our Technical Service Department (primeserv-aug-technical@man-
es.com) to verify if the ASTL upgrade will be compatible with your specific engine control system.

Please take into consideration that with this minor system upgrade, a respective major engine failure may be
avoided in the future.

Further checkups

■ Manual test of the emergency stop system according to CUS 231 and CUS 299
■ Overhaul of the emergency stop valve (M329/2) after 20.000 - 24.000 running hours
■ Condition check of the magnetic coil on the emergency stop valve according to PCI 375
