BEED 4 – A

ASSIGNMENT #1

UNIT 1: PEACE EDUCATION

Lesson 1. A Holistic Understanding of Peace and Violence

Activity

Fill in the circles of the terms related to the word PEACE. Using the words listed,

create your definition of PEACE.

Nonviolence

Harmony Quiet

PEACE

Stress-
Order
free

My own definition

Peace is the state of nonviolence. It is a condition where a person, place, thing, etc. is
stress-free, quiet and in order. There is harmony among them.

Analysis

• Why do we need peace?

Peace, though a frequently used term, was one of the intangible things that was
hard to define and achieve in life. Despite this, it is something that we still sought
for, because we need it; it promotes stability and growth. Peace is the manifestation
of nonviolence harmony, justice, and respect for oneself, and among individuals and
societies. The absence of peace means that these—nonviolence, harmony, justice,
and respect—are absent as well. This hinders growth and stability in oneself, and
among individuals, societies, and the world as a whole.
• Is there a reason to fear when there is no peace?
Yes, there is a reason to fear when there is no peace. The absence of peace means
that the presence of conflict, violence, injustices and disrespect is there within
individuals, societies, and the world as well—as mentioned in the answers from the
previous question.
• How do you find your own place right now?
Peace within myself is already a difficult task. Overthinking and anxiousness is a daily
part of my life. Therefore, I can say that peace—at least of my mind—is still a far
place to reach. However, I engage myself in activities, thoughts, and behavior as
well as surround or distance myself from people that can either contribute or harm
the peace within myself that I try so hard to break; that’s how I find my own place.

Application

Make an acrostic of the word PEACE based on what you’ve learned in the lesson.

Peace is a concept that has now been split into two: negative and positive peace;

Each has its own definition—negative is the absence of war or direct violence, while positive
peace is the presence of presence of just and non-exploitative relationships, as well as
human and ecological well-being.

A variety of levels of relationships, from personal peace to peace between humans, earth,
and beyond, should also be included in understanding this concept.

Comprehensive view of peace is needed to move forward toward a genuine peace culture.

Empowered communities contributes to collective action and participation in shaping a

peaceful and just world.

Assessment

Reflect on the quote. Answer the questions below.

“We must bring love and compassion to the world today. We don’t need guns and bombs to
do this.” – Mother Theresa

Choose 2 words that are important to you from the quote. Explain why?

From the quote, the two words that I personally considered important are love and
compassion. These two, as the quote suggests, are what is needed by the world, not bombs
and guns. If every individual and society serve love and compassion on golden platters
instead of throwing hate, disrespect, injustices against each others’ wall, then the world
could be a little better. In essence, love and compassion are driving forces behind the
behaviors, policies, and systems that create and sustain peace, starting from within and
extending outward to our relationships, communities, and the global stage.

How does the quote affect your daily life?

This quote seems to be the most relevant today, given the situation of some countries and
ours especially in relation to wars and conflicts with other countries. This quote affects my
daily life in a way that it pushed or drove me to “bring love and compassion to the world.” It
influence me to first create and sustain peace within myself to be able to contribute to
creating and sustaining peace with
others individuals, societies, and
the world.

Lesson 2. Types of Violence

and Promotion of Peace

Activity

• Draw the violence tree.

• On the roots and trunk, write the

causes of violence. On the leaves,
write the effects of violence.

• What is violence for you?

Violence is a behavior which uses of an unjust or unwarranted physical force upon
something or someone that causes or is intended to harm.

• Why is it continuing despite the efforts?

The manifestation of violence within an individual and among them, societies, or the world is
because of various factors—social, economic, political, cultural, and psychological—
interplaying. Its continuity is inevitable because the underlying, deep-rooted causes of this
are not firmly addressed. I believe the causes that should be addressed first are those that
are within an individual.

Analysis

How can you counter it as an individual or group?

As an individual, the first step to countering violence is killing the cause of violence within
me by managing my emotions, regularly reflection my actions that exhibit violence, fostering
empathy, and many more ways. Additionally, I can use my voice to promote nonviolence
and educate myself and others.

Application

Write a prayer for children and women who are victims of violence based on the peace
culture framework.

Loving Creator, source of peace and compassion, we come before you with eyes filled with
tears of sorrow for children and women who have suffered at the hands of violence. We lift
them up to you, seeking your healing presence and infinite love to surround and protect
them.

For the children, whose innocence were replaced by fear, we ask for your mercy. May they
finally find security and solace in your loving arms. Grant them the strength, courage and
resilience to heal and overcome the pain, and see the world with beauty once again.

For the women, who had felt the rough hands of violence with silent cries, we ask for your
comfort. May they also find the strength, courage and resilience to heal and reclaim their
dignity and questioned worth. May they, once again, find their purpose.
We ask you to give justice to the victims as well as to stop the occurrence of violence so
that no children and women would suffer from violent hands.

We ask this in the name of all that is holy, and in the spirit of love and peace that
transcends all boundaries. Amen.

Assessment

How do you feel about people who are ex-convict or having been imprisoned because of
violence? Choose two situations and explain your answer.

1. They should be treated as normal people.

2. They should be guided in doing some things.
3. They should not be allowed to earn their livelihood.
4. They should be laughed at and their potentials should be ignored.
5. They should be encouraged to join community activities.

Among the choices, I choose the first and fifth situations.

They should be treated as normal people as they, too, possess inherent dignity and should
be treated with respect. Additionally, they have, once again, retained their human rights,
which means they have rights to fair treatment, reintegration to society, and the likes. This
also helps in breaking the cycle of crime because we break away from stigmatizing them
and fighting discrimination, hence reducing relapse. This should also serve as a sign of
embracing forgiveness as well as giving them a chance for redemption.

I also believe that it is best to encourage them to join community activities. Through this,
we can help them build connections and establish sense of belonging as well as demonstrate
their eagerness to give positive contributions to the society. This can also help them build
their skill and confidence, and provide purpose and motivation.
