555 Timer IC

The 555 Timer IC got its name from the three 5KΩ resistors that are used in its voltage divider network.
This IC is useful for generating accurate time delays and oscillations.
Pin Diagram The 555 Timer IC is an 8 pin mini Dual-Inline Package (DIP). The pin diagram of a 555
Timer IC is shown in the following figure –

Basic Astable 555 Oscillator Circuit

• It has two unstable
states
WORKING

• capacitor, C charges up through both timing resistors, R1 and R2

• but discharges itself only through resistor, R2 as the other side of R2 is connected to the
discharge terminal, pin 7.
• the capacitor charges up to 2/3Vcc (the upper comparator limit) which is determined by the
0.693(R1+R2)C combination.
• discharges itself down to 1/3Vcc (the lower comparator limit) determined by the 0.693(R2*C)
combination.
• This results in a square waveform whose output “ON” and “OFF” time periods are determined
by the capacitor and resistors combinations.

• Where, R is in Ω and C in Farads.

• 555 Oscillator Cycle Time

• 555 Oscillator Duty Cycle

Operation.
• The monostable mode is also called “one-shot” pulse generator.
• When a negative going trigger pulse is applied trigger comparator senses the short negative
going trigger pulse to be just below the reference voltage (1/3 VCC), the device triggers and
the output goes HIGH.
• The discharge transistor is turned OFF and the capacitor C that is externally connected to its
collector will start charging to the max value through the resistor R.
• The HIGH output pulse ends when the charge on the capacitor reaches 2/3 VCC
• The pulse width of the output rectangular pulse is W = 1.1 RC.

• The various applications of Monostable Multivibrator Using IC 555 are,

1. Frequency divider
2. Pulse width modulation
3. Linear ramp generator
4. Pulse position modulation
