Four fun and interesting festivals

The Hay Festival is one of the world´s biggest book festivals. Every year many people visit the market town of
Hay, in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. You can listen to talks and ideas
from writers, poets, scientists and artists. The festival continues for ten days. There are also Hay Festivals in ten
different cities around the world every year.
Thousands of people from all over the world come to the small town of Buñol in Spain for the Tomatina Festival,
the world’s biggest food fight. At 11 am on the last Wednesday in August, trucks drive into the town square with
150,000 tomatoes. The people then spend the next hour throwing the tomatoes at each other. When the fight
ends at 12 o’clock, the whole town and everyone in it is completely covered in tomatoes. Just don’t wear your
best clothes!
Every year from September to October, cow herders bring their cows from high in the Alp mountains in Europe
to the valleys for the winter. This journey is the beginning of the Almabtrieb festival. The cows wear colourful
costumes. When the cows arrive in the towns and villages, the people celebrate eating delicious local food.
The Songkran festival in Thailand is the world’s biggest water fight. People celebrate the beginning of the New
Year in April by throwing water at each other. So if you try to walk down the street, watch out for people with
water balloons and hose pipes. You’ll get very wet, but it’s not a problem: April in Thailand is very hot and dry, so
Songkran is a nice way to cool down. The best place to celebrate Songkran is the city of Chiang Mai, where the
fun continues for six days.
