Use “I wish” at the beginning of a sentence to express that you want things to be diferent, or that you feel
sadness or regret about something.

Sentence form I wish + subject + verb (past simple) + complement


wishes in the present
I wish I were at the beach now.
(But I am not at the beach; I am in my ofce.)

Sentence form I wish + subject + had + verb (past partciple) + complement


wishes in the past
I wish I had followed a career in music instead of engineering.
(But I didn’t choose music. I studied engineering.)

Sentence form
I wish + subject + was /were going to + verb (base form) + complement
wishes in the future
I wish I was going to travel soon.
(But I’m not going to travel soon; I’m going to stay home.)
