Dialog:

Mrs. Vina: Let's arrange positive activities for your long holiday.
Bryan: Yes, Mom.
Mrs. Vina: I think having a camp without smartphones is a good idea.
Bryan: What do you mean?
Mrs. Vina: While camping, we won't use smartphones. We should try to free ourselves from
them. Smartphones have become such a big part of our lives.
Bryan: Are you sure? It might be hard to do, Mom. I'm afraid of losing contact with my
friends and missing important information.
Mrs. Vina: That's the symptom of nomophobia.
Bryan: What's that, Mom?
Mrs. Vina: Nomophobia is the fear of being without a smartphone or not having network
coverage.
Bryan: Please tell me more.
Mrs. Vina: Nomophobia is the bad side of gadgets, especially smartphones. It has
psychological and physical consequences. Psychologically, it can lead to anxiety, depression,
or isolation. Physically, it may cause headaches, stomachaches, eye discomfort from
overexposure to the screen, or wrist and neck pain due to improper positioning.
Bryan: Then, what's your opinion about it, Mom?
Mrs. Vina: It's understandable that people feel that way, given how much we rely on our
phones these days. However, I think we should take breaks from technology every now and
then. It's okay to use our phones for certain things, but we shouldn't let them take over our
lives.
Bryan: I get the point, Mom. So, what should we do with the smartphones?
Mrs. Vina: I think we should be aware of how much time we're spending on our phones and
make a conscious effort to disconnect from time to time. It's good for our mental health and
overall wellbeing.

Garry: What do you think of FOMO?

Sonia: What is that?

Garry: It's fear of missing out on something important or exciting.

Sonia: I'm not familiar with the term, but I think it's related to nomophobia.

Garry: You're right. Nomophobia and FOMO correlate with each other. Nomophobia is a
condition when people are afraid of having no smartphones around them. In other words,
those people are addicted to smartphones. Meanwhile, FOMO can be a reason for
nomophobia.

Sonia: Please tell me further.

Garry: A few people will experience FOMO when they don't have smartphones with them.
They are afraid of either missing trending topics or what is happening with their friends and
environment.

Sonia: Hmm, many people have experienced FOMO and as far as I'm concerned, it's not
good for our mental health.
Garry: I get your point, but you should remember that we cannot ignore information around
us. We should get up-to-date information.

Sonia: That's so true, but I must say that up-to-date information occasionally bothers us. You
know, many hoaxes are everywhere and they can make us upset and annoyed.

Garry: So, do you think that up-to-date information is not important?

Sonia: I don't say that. What I mean is that we should not be afraid of losing information. I
tend to think that we occasionally need to enjoy our time, without being bombarded with
information about what other people are doing.

Garry: You're right. I think it's reasonable to say that we need to be mindful of our own
needs. It's important to focus on what makes us happy and fulfilled. Otherwise, we'll be
pressured to do things just because of everyone else.

Sonia: I agree with you a hundred percent. It's all about balance and never let FOMO control
our lives.
