The chart illustrates how four types of transport contributed in the goods transportation from
1974 to 2002 in the UK.
Overall, almost all the modes of transport witnessed an increase in the amount of goods
transported over the period. In addition, the figure for Road transport was consistently the
highest.
The amount of goods transported by Road started at about 70 million tonnes in 1974, after
which it saw fluctation until 1994, before ending the period with a peak of nearly 95 million
tonnes. The figure for Pipeline was at approximately 5 million tonnes at the beginning, it rose
to around 25 million tonnes in 1982, followed by a slow decrease to 20 million tonnes in the
year 1994 and remained unchange throughout the period of 8-year.
40 million tonnes of goods transported by Rail in the year 1974, with a subsequent drop to
around 30 million tonnes and a final rise back to 40 million tonnes at the end of the period. It
was surpassed by the goods quantities contributed by Water transport, which increased
sharply from approximately 39 million tonnes in 1974 to over 60 million tonnes from 2002
onwards.
