Hari Kemerdekaan is the Independence Day of Malaysia.

It is a national holiday which is


celebrated on 31 August every year. It is to commemorate the independence of the
Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule on 31 August 1957. In a wider context, it also
celebrates the formation of Malaysia. Although Sabah and Sarawak gained their
independence on 31 August 1963, Hari Kemerdekaan is a significant date throughout
Malaysia. On this day, Malaysians from all backgrounds, race and religion celebrate together
in a harmonious way.

Each year, there will be a different theme for the Merdeka celebration. For 2022, the theme
will be “#Keluarga Malaysia Teguh Bersama”. The theme portrays how the society is living in
peace, unity and in togetherness, which is something that all Malaysians should be thankful
of. Even though Malaysia is populated by citizens with different races, religions and cultures,
we are capable of living together in harmony and peace. Despite the differences that the
citizens of Malaysia possess, our togetherness and nationalism become the strongest values
that unite us.

Unity among races and a greater patriotic spirit among Malaysians are certainly stronger
now than two or three decades ago and this theme will further promote the unification of
Malaysia.

During this whole month of August, also known as the Merdeka month, you will see most
Malaysians express their patriotism and love towards their culturally unique country by
raising the Malaysian flag on their vehicles, balcony of their homes and even along the
streets! It is also during this time that government buildings all over Kuala Lumpur and most
shopping malls are hoisted with the Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang. The whole build up
towards Malaysia’s Independence Day is celebrated with pride and joy where competitions
and parades will be held.

August 31st is a day when the entire nation remembers the hard work of the heroes who
were fighting for the independence of the country. On this monumental day, citizens can be
seen celebrating the country’s independence in their own way as an expression of gratitude,
pride and happiness for the peace of our country, Malaysia. The voices of the people can be
heard echoing in every nook and crook of the country; chanting, cheering and shouting in
unison - Merdeka, Merdeka, Merdeka!

For hundreds of years our country has been colonized, trampled on and deprived of its
independence and welfare by cruel invaders. Thousands of wars, thousands of lives and
thousands of liters of blood have been sacrificed for the savagery of the invaders. Therefore,
on this happy day, let us recall the struggles of the heroes who succeeded in bringing this
country's independence so that we can be free from the shackles of colonialism and are able
to gather together in this glorious nation. On this meaningful day, let's convey our
thankfulness to the Almighty Allah for the freedom that has been bestowed upon us and pray
so that this independence can be preserved for future generations.

We can manifest a high spirit and sense of nationalism in various ways, but the most
important thing for us as students is to learn. In this modern era, I believe that there is a new
type of colonization which is colonization of the mind. Today’s generation is easily exposed
to inappropriate media online, given that the use of the Internet and technology are
increasing rapidly, making them accessible to everyone including the younger generation.
The spread of problematic ideologies intended to initiate hateful crime and action can
gradually break us apart if we fail to curb the issue. That is why it is immensely important for
us to be smart so we can filter and manage the information that we received online wisely.
Together, we should act nicely to one another and cooperate to maintain the peaceful state
of the country.

In conclusion, everyone should do their part in nurturing a high sense of nationalism. Let us
become a useful generation for the nation that we love and are proud of.
