ELEVATORS

SECTION 14 20 00

1 GENERAL CONDITIONS

1.1 SCOPE

The purpose of the job is to supply, install, put operation, test, commission and guarantee for one
year the here in specified elevators.

All applicable provisions of the contract General conditions. Technical data and design require-
ments of the electrical works mentioned herein-after are part of this section.

1.2 GENERAL CONDITIONS

1.2.1 Contractor should follow in all his work the general condition and specifications for eleva-
tors installation in building issued by the ministry of Housing and utilities.

1.2.2 The required work shall be executed in the best and most thorough manner under the di-
rection of and to the satisfaction of the Engineer. i.e. Consulting Engineer who will jointly interpret
the meanings of the drawings and specifications and who will be authorized to reject any work and
/ or materials which in their judgment are not in full compliance therewith or not done in profes-
sional manner.

1.2.3 Contractor is held responsible for his work until its completion and final acceptance.
He is to replace any of the defective materials equipment etc. or which may be damaged, lost or
stolen, by the same, without any additional cost to the owner.

1.2.4 Contractor must guarantee that the materials supplied and the workmanship of this con-
tract will be of the best quality. All equipment will be installed in a practical and first class mode
of installation, operator properly, and that nothing is being omitted in the way of labor and / or
materials required to do so.

1.2.5 It is preferable to the client to ensure easy maintenance and availability of spare parts in the
future. To do so equipment should be manufactured by one manufacturer.

1.2.6 Manufacturer of the equipment and materials called here for must have at least 10 years’
experience in manufacturing this equipment.

1.2.7 Contractor workforce i.e. individuals, technicians and foremen, should be fully experienced
in their fields and used to the highest class of electrical contracting works at an international level
of professionalism. This workforce will be under the contractor’s field engineer supervision.
Contractor will have to submit a construction field schedule for his work showing material delivery
dates to the job site, installations and testing date before acceptance of his work.

1.3 COORDINATION OF WORK

Contractor will be responsible for coordinating all engineering works so that each will be installed
in a manner and technique ensuring proper function and adequate fixing. Amendment to the
contractor installation drawings as a consequence of the coordination of the various works shall be
made by the contractor prior to their submittal to the consulting engineer for approval.

All field engineer work should be carried out by qualified draftsmen under the supervision of a
competent engineer having previous experience in this field.

1.4 DELIVERY, PACKING & STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

1.4.1 Any defective item being cracked, damaged, etc. will be rejected at job site if delivered.
Replacement will be at contractor own expense. During fieldwork progress all open ends of pipes,
insulated cables and equipment which may be damaged by the surrounding atmosphere, e.g. dust,
humidity, etc. should be capped and or protected by a cover before installation, otherwise it will be
rejected.

1.4.2 All equipment measuring, testing instrument materials, etc. should be delivered on site in a
completely new condition, properly packed and protected from any mishandling or adverse weath-
er. It should be preserved in its packing cases until installation in its right place.

1.5 SAMPLES & CATALOGUES

Contractor to submit samples and catalogues according to the Engineer requirements. for approv-
al.

1.6 OPERATING INSTRUCTION MANUALS

1.6.1 Upon completion and acceptance of the work, furnish the Owner with a complete set of
instruction, wiring diagram. Catalogues, pamphlets drawing. Lubricating charts and maintenance
manuals in duplicate. It should describe the operation and proper maintenance procedure of the
equipment. Mount one set or lubricating charts and wiring diagram in each machine room to be in
frame under glass.

1.6.2 Instruct and train Owner’s assigned personnel for a period of at least 10 working days free
of any charge.

1.7 GUARANTEE, FINAL ACCEPTANCE & CERTIFICATES

1.7.1 All work performed should be free from any defects. Any defective materials due to poor
workmanship, or damage resulting indirectly from any of these two factors, will be repaired at the
contractor’s own expense during period of guarantee.

1.7.2 Guarantee period lasts for one whole year starting from the date of acceptance of work per-
formed.

1.7.3 A percent of total contract value (according to the contract general conditions) will be with-
held for one whole year starting from the date of acceptance of work, i.e. this percent is to be paid
by the end of guarantee period.

1.7.4 Contractor should submit a certificate of compliance with all specifications & standard tech-
nical requirements of work performed and assure that all design criteria are met. This certificate
should be submitted and approved before final payment.

1.7.5 Any work performed will not be given acceptance before running a complete test to it un-
der the standard test conditions set by the engineer to ensure the proper performance and func-
tioning of all installations.

1.8 SHOP DRAWINGS:

1.8.1 A list of manufacturers should be submitted for approval prior to the purchase of any single
material or equipment.

1.8.2 Catalogue information and factory assembling drawings, as required for a complete expla-
nation and description of all fixtures, devices and items of equipment.

1.8.3 Documents will not be filled for acceptance unless:


- They comply with the number of copies to be submitted as stated in the requirements of
general conditions.
- They include complete information pertaining to appurtenance and accessories.
- They are submitted as package where they pertain to related items.
- They are properly marked with external connection identification as related to the project
where they consist of standard factory assembly or field installation drawings.

1.9 WORKING DRAWINGS, DIAGRAM & SCHEDULES

1.9.1 As the work proceeds, the contractor will prepare all necessary working drawings, diagrams
and schedules which may be required for the following purposes:

- To illustrate in detail the arrangement of the various section of the work, to identify and
describe the various components.

- To enable the work to be properly integrated with the other trades, by furnishing needed
information to them.

1.9.2 Two copies of those drawings and documents should be submitted whenever by the engi-
neer to enable other parties to make use of any information related to their works.

1.9.3 All drawings, diagrams and schedules called for in this clause should be submitted to the
engineer for examination and approval before work starts. Consequently, two copies of each is to
be submitted by the contractor to the engineer for distribution purposes.

1.9.4 Wiring and connection diagrams are to be provided for all electrical equipment and/or sys-
tems, which form part of the contract works.

1.9.5 Physical drawings which show the position of pull poxes, junction boxes, and conduits cable
routes for power, communication, instrumentation, control cables and any installation details.

1.9.6 Such wiring and connection diagrams shall be fully comprehensive and shall coordinate the
manufacture data in respect of the individual items of equipment.

1.10 RECORD DRAWINGS

As soon as possible after the date of completion of work and in any case within one month there-
after, the contractor shall prepare and supply to the engineer the record drawings of the entire
work as installed. This will have include all of the following:

- General arrangements of all services to a scale of not less than 1: 50


- Detailed layouts of plants rooms and similar spaces to a scale of not than 1:20
- Schedules of all equipment as deemed necessary by the engineer.

1.11 PROTECTIVE PAINTING

1.11.1 Deliver all equipment with prime and finish coat as specified. Clean up all equipment before
acceptance.

1.12 CLEANING

When directed by the Engineer the contractor should remove from entire installation of work of
this section all protecting materials dirt, dust, smears, stains, paint spots and the like so as to leave
it in a clean condition. Clean and remove all smudge, fingerprints, etc.

1.13 SETTING TO WORK, COMMISSIONING & TESTING

1.13.1 The contractor, having ensured that electricity and other necessary supplies are available,
shall set to work the completed works at the selection of the engineer and make all necessary ad-
justments to ensure correct functioning.

1.13.2 Details and method of carrying out the recording of tests shall be arranged with the engi-
neer. Representative of the employer to participate in the tests. However, this does not relieve the
contractor from responsibility in carrying out the tests satisfactorily.

1.13.3 Contractor will provide all test instruments together with skilled supervision and adequate
labor for carrying out the tests.

1.13.4 It is the contractor’s responsibility to ensure that all components of the system, including
controls, are operating satisfactorily before any of the work done is considered complete.

1.14 WORK INCLUDED

All work and supplies necessary for installation, operation, tests and maintenance is included in
this contract.

2 ELEVATORS GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2.1 QUALIFICATION:

Contractor will require elevator manufacturer to furnish a statement which will be included in the
contractor’s proposal giving a complete description of all parts wherein the elevator that he pro-
poses to furnish do not comply with these specifications or are in conflict with the work of other
trades as specified or shown in the contract documents.
Failure to furnish such a statement will be interpreted to mean that the contractor agrees to meet
all the requirements of the specifications and any conflicts with the work of other trades brought
about by the use of this manufacturer’s equipment will not result in any added cost to Owner.

2.2 INTENT:

Elevator specifications are intended to cover the complete installation of the elevator plants and
to outline broadly the equipment required but not to cover the details of design and construction.
Such details are recognized to be the exclusive responsibility of manufacturer and installer.
It is hereby recognized that the Engineer did not invent or develop any part of the elevator sys-
tems, but has only made selections of capacities, speeds, control systems, materials... Etc. From
choices made available by the manufacturer.

2.3 CODES AND STANDARDS

GENERAL

Material and services furnished shall be in accordance with the codes and standards listed in Para-
graph next herein. Later editions may be used by mutual consent in writing between Contractor
and Owner.
In addition to these codes and standards, Contractor shall comply with the British ordinances, laws
and regulation listed in the specifications.
These codes and standards set forth the minimum requirements which may be exceeded by Con-
tractor if, in Contractor’s judgment and with Owner’s acceptance or more economical designs
or materials are available for successful and continuous operation of Contractor’s equipment as
required by this specification.
In there is any apparent conflict among codes, standards or this specification, Contractor shall refer
the conflict to Owner for written resolution.

2.5 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

2.5.1 GENERAL

The elevator shall be electrically operated and equipped with an automatic collective self-leveling
control system. The hoisting machine shall be the gear less traction type with a variable voltage
variable frequently motor. It will be installed at the overhead run inside the shaft on the top ends
of the guide rails inside the shaft (machine room less). The car shall be provided with an automatic
sliding door, and the hoist way doors shall be automatic sliding as specified in specifications. The
elevator shall be designed for installation in the owner’s hoist way, complete with all necessary
hoisting equipment and accessories and ready for Owner to put into service. The hoist way will be
enclosed, and hoist way doors will open directly to the building interior.

2.5.2 DESIGN

Design, manufacture, and installation shall comply with the appropriate sections of International
Standard

The passenger elevators shall be designed for accessibility and use by the physically disabled in
accordance with International Standard / European code En 81-70.

Location of machine shall be in the overhead run of the hoist way (Machine room less) with all oth-
er equipment inside the hoist way.

2.5.3 SUBMITTALS:

a) MANUFACTURER’S DATA:

Submit to the Engineer in accordance with the requirements of the contract documents, copies
of manufacturer’s specifications and installation instruction for each item or component part, and
for each elevator system. Include manufacturer certification and other data as may be required to
show compliance with these specifications. Indicate by transmittal form that copies of each in-
struction have been distributed to installer (if other than the manufacturer).

b) SHOP DRAWINGS:

Submit complete detailed shop drawings, for each elevator system, of all fabricated work for review
prior to commencement of any work in accordance with the requirement of contract documents.
Items will be detailed and include, but will not be limited to the following:

1. Typical sections of each elevator shaft, full height, at the scale of 1: 50

2. Typical plan of each elevator machine room, at the scale of 1: 20. Show arrangement of all
equipment.

3. Working drawings showing location of all elevator equipment, including mechanical, electrical,
structural loads and other information required by the Engineer, at scale as directed.

4. Complete wiring diagrams of all circuits in the systems and parts catalogues.

5. Detailed drawings of each elevator car and elevator hoist way entrances, at the scale of 1: 15.
Include elevation, floor plans reflected ceiling plans and complete details of doors, frame controls,
fixtures and all accessory equipment.

6. Provide a record set of drawings with all of the changes made during the installation of the
work. At the completion of the job, submit for the Owner’s use a complete set of as installed plans
and wiring diagrams.

C) SAMPLES:

Submit to the Engineer, in accordance with requirements of contract documents, samples as fol-
lows:

1. Each metal finish required acceptable low and high range of variation in color and finish will be
governed by control samples in the Engineer’s office.

2. Hall lanterns, hall positions indicators, call buttons and graphics.

3. Car finish materials, including finished metals, finished wood panels, plastic laminates, various
ceiling grills, Plexiglas, tiles.... etc.

2.5.4 GUARANTEE & MAINTENANCE AGREEMENT:

Submit to Owner in accordance with requirements of contract documents a copy of written guar-
antee with the following 12 months maintenance agreement as follows:

Provide maintenance service of equipment for a period of 12 months after the date of final
acceptance. This service will include regular examination of the installation by competent and
trained personnel and will include all necessary adjustments, greasing oiling, cleaning, supplies and
replacements of parts to keep equipment in perfect operation, except such parts made necessary
by negligence not caused by this contractor. All commonly replaced will be kept in stock.
All costs in connection with such maintenance will be included in the contract price.
Include 24 hours Emergency Call Back Service for all elevators.

2.5.5 MAINTENANCE MANUALS:

Submit to Owner 5 complete sets of maintenance and operating instructions, including parts lists
for each complete elevator system. Assemble manuals for component parts into single binders for
each group of elevators and identify each binder with elevator designations shown.

2.5.6 ELECTRIC WIRING:

All wiring and electrical inter-connections will comply with the governing code. Insulated wiring
will have flame retarding and moisture-proof outer covering and will be run in conduit, tubing or
electrical wire-ways. Traveling cables will be flexible and suitably suspended to relieve strain on
individual conductors.

2.5.7 TEMPORARY USE:

Elevators will not be used for construction purposed or during the construction period of building
without written permission from the Engineer and Owner in which case such use will be limited to
one car.

Temporary enclosures or hoist way opening protection.


Protection against damage to machines, cars, doors or door frames will be provided by contractor
if temporary usage is permitted. Any repair or replacement to restore elevator equipment to its
original condition will be made by contractor at this expenses.

2.5.8 INSTALLATION:

Install all component parts of each elevator system in accordance with manufacturer’s printed in-
structions and recommendations, unless otherwise shown or specified.

3 TECHNICAL SPECS.

3.1 CAR OPERATING PANEL

- Lift car shall be equipped with stainless steel car operating panel containing:

* Full set of push buttons with built-in “call accepted” lights.


* An “Alarm” button connected to an alarm bell inside hoist way with rechargeable battery.
* An illuminated car position indicator with directional arrows.
* An illuminated and audible “Overload” indicator shall be bridged after running.
* A switch for car fan.
* A telephone to be connected to the building exchange.
* Door open button.
* Independent operation key.
* Parking switch(on /off key).
* Fire man operation key inside car.

3.2 HALL LANTERNS, POSITION INDICATORS AND BUTTONS IN LANDING FLOORS:

Hall fixtures at all floors shall be equipped as the following:

* A common push button box with stainless face.


* Directional arrows up and down and arrival gong.
* An illuminated position indicator in all serviced floors.
* Fire man return key in the main floor.

3.3 CAR FINISH:

- Car finish shall be as follows:


* front walls : Finished in stainless steel , TYPE 304.
up to the middle rail and polished stainless steel , up to the
ceiling
* Side walls : Finished in Etched stainless steel TYPE 304.
* Flooring : Marble to be selected by the engineer as per elevator lobby

* Ceiling : Opaque white with patterned acrylic panel for lighting with stainless
steel panels on sides.
* Lighting : Two, indirect type fluorescent light fittings
+ An emergency light with rechargeable batteries
* Handrail : Stainless steel on side walls.
* Ventilation : Suitable electric blower with center diffuser.
* Car door : Automatic opening door shall be in Stainless steel
TYPE 304.
* Door safety : Multiple infrared/light beams cover full height the door.
Device shall be installed at car entrance.
* Emergency exit: Shall be provided through ceiling of car.
NOTE:

• all finishes to be selected and approved by the engineer

3.4 HOISTWAY ENTRANCE:

a) Complete elevator automatic opening entrance.


b) two hours fire rated baked door panels and entrance frames.
c) Extruded aluminum entrance sills.
d) Header and doors pre-drilled for door equipment.

3.5 CAB AND LANDING DOORS EQUIPMENT:

a) VVVF drive for automatic opening door operation with regulated speed reduction
b) Cam-type limit switches.
c) Car door hanger assembly with heavy-duty steel header, bearing sheaves up thrust rollers
and relating cables and pulleys.
d) Car gate switch.
e) A safety multiple infrared/light beams cover full height the car door or a safety door retract-
able edges with an infrared/light beam at car door entrance to detect passengers and objects.
f) Heavy -duty mechanical and electrical door interlock assembly per entrance including pick-
up roller and linkage.
g) Heavy-duty spring door closer per entrance.
h) landing doors shall be finished in hairline stainless steel.

3.6 CONTROLLER:

a) Heavy-duty microprocessor computerized Control System, satisfies with required specifica-


tions which has been designed for this project.
b) Floor/wall mounted enclosure, oil-tight, dust-tight with epoxy paint finish.
c) Programmable Controller as the main logic element.
d) Variable Voltage, Variable Frequency traction motor driver for completely smooth starts and
stops and accurate leveling (Closed loop system with feedback).
e) Lift shall be equipped with a self-re-leveling device which brings the car automatically to
stop within 0.5 cm maximum of exact floor levels regardless of car load and direction of travel
self-re-leveling device shall correct over-travel and under travel of car, stopping position.
f) Over load and phase failure protection and reversal phase correction.
g) All required additional circuitry and equipment for complete control of the elevator includ-
ing DC supply for machine brake.
h) Full automatic collective operation.
i) Independent Service operation.
j) Car top inspection operation.
k) Automatic operation and shut off of lights and ventilation fan for energy saving.
l) Variable, adjustable door closing time controls for car call, hall calls, and main lobby.
m) Special fire service return to main floor, and fireman’s operation from the elevator car.
n) Terminal roller type limit switches with brackets to prevent over and under travel of lift.
o) The car shall be equipped with over load-weighting device to prevent the lift from running if
the car is over loaded. In this case the power shall not be connecting to motor to prevent the car
of running with over load weighting. A lift with a full load shall by-pass the landing calls until the
load has decreased inside the car sufficiently then the car can accept new landing calls
p) The control panel shall be provided with an emergency light which can be used when the
power supply is failed.

3.7 CONTROL SYSTEM:

- Lifts shall be equipped with a simplex collective control system having the following characteris-
tics:
Passengers wishing to travel upwards or downwards shall press the “Up” or “Down” landing
push buttons respectively. When a push button is pressed, it shall light up to indicate that the call
is accepted.
Control system shall register and store in its memory all landing calls and car calls. While traveling
upwards, a lift car shall stop at each landing where a passenger has pressed an “Up” landing push
button, and also at any floor for which a car push button has been pressed.
The same system shall also apply when a lift car is traveling downwards, but this time it stops at
each landing where a “Down” landing push button has been pressed and also at any floor for
which a car call has been registered.

Note;
Lifts which have only two landing stops will have only one push buttons at every landing call
panel
- Lift shall have a programmable facility of changing the homing floor.

3.8 HOISTING MACHINE:

3.8.1 Traction machines shall be of the gearless type mounted rigidly on the top end of the guide
rails or installed down in the pit inside the shaft.

3.8.2 The machine shall be located in the hoist way at the overhead run level of the hoist way or
down in the pit

3.9 LIFT MOTOR:

3.9.1 Hoisting compact motor shall be Permanent Magnet AC motor with reduced torque ripple
for a comfortable smooth ride, the motor shall be designed with low starting current, to withstand
the severe load encountered in elevator service. Motor shall have sufficient power to operate with
the specified load and speed without overheating. A heat sensor shall be provided to protect the
motor against excessive temperature rise.

3.9.2 Motor shall be not less than 180 start per hour with low noise, low vibration and low heat.

3.9.3 Hoisting motor shall be supplied and installed c/w all required safety and operating controls
for starting, stopping and direction of travel of elevator.

Control equipment shall be fully automatic and suitable for the specified traction motor.

Motors shall be provided with all required protection against overload current, over speed phase
failure, phase reversal.... etc.
Motor shall be controlled with VVVF inverter control.
Motor shall be electrically braking by regenerative braking

3.10 Brake:

- The brake shall be spring applied, electro-magnetically released-self cooling and capable stop-
ping the car safely, under rated speed and 125% rated load.
- The drum or the disc on which the brake operates shall be safely coupled to the traction sheave.
- The brake shall be designed for automatic and instantaneous application for each time when the
current supplying the motor is cut off whatever the reason.
- The brake springs shall work in compression. To contain the brake hold off in normal operation
of motor a continuous flow of direct current supplied from control panel is required.
- Braking shall be effected by application on the brake drum or discs by at least two shoes, or
calipers.
- The brake shall be of heavy construction, reliable acting and having the proper bearing area suit-
able for the load and speed specified.
- When the motor of the lift is likely to function as a generator, it shall not be possible for the elec-
tric device operating the brake to be fed by the driving motor.
- The brake lining shall be incombustible.

3.11 GUIDES Rails:

- The guide rails shall be T-section made of drawn steel, high wear resistance and high tensile
quality steel.
- The rubbing sliding surfaces shall have high accuracy good finish and machined surface.
- Guide rail brackets, rail clips, fish plates and their fastenings shall be of steel.
- It will not permit to replace the T-section guide rail of the counter weight with steel wires.
- Hollow type guide rails for counter weight are not accepted
- Guide rails and their attachments and joints must have enough strength to withstand the forces
imposed due to the operation of the safety gear and deflection of car in case of uneven loading of
car.
- Guides shall be made of standard guide rails with tongue and grooved joints for car and count-
er- weight according to international standard.
- The top and the bottom ends of guide rails in the shaft shall be determined so as the guide
shoes of car and counter weight cannot travel more over these ends even at up or down extreme
traveling in running.
- It is for bidden to use welding to join two guide rails together, the back end flanges of the rail
and the fish plates shall be aurally machined to give a flat surface
- The ends of each rail shall be bolted to fish plates with at least four bolts and the width of the
fish plates shall not be less than the width of the back of the rail.
- Guide rails shall be properly designed, installed, and strongly fixed so that to be able enough to
support machine or wheels which will bolted on the top end of the guide rails at the overhead run
within the shaft.

3.12 HOIST AND GOVERNOR ROPES:

Hoist ropes shall be high traction steel specially designed for elevator service having a safety factor
in compliance with International Standard. Ropes shall be securely attached at both ends into the
shackles using International Standard approved method. The ratio between diameter of traction
sheaves or pulleys and the nominal diameter of hoisting ropes shall be at least 40, hoisting ropes
shall not stressed more than 1/12 of their tensile strength and the number of ropes not less than
three.
The ratio between the pitch diameter pulley of the over speed governor and the governor rope
diameter shall be at least 30 and the governor rope shall not be less than 6mm from steel specially
designed for elevator service. The two ends shall be securely fastened together at the car and shall
be connected to the safety operating mechanism.
Governor rope shall pass over the governor sheaves and over a tension device at the bottom of the
hoist way.
Governor shall be mounted and supported on the guide rails rigidly.

3.13 BUFFERS:

- Suitable buffers with necessary blocking and supports shall be provided at bottom limit of travel
for cars and counter weights.

- Suitable buffers shall be used for lifts of rated speeds 1m/sec such that the total possible stroke
shall be at least equal to twice the gravity stopping distance at 115% rated speed.

3.14 COUNTER-WEIGHT:

Counter-weight shall be designed for smooth and safe operation. Counter-weight shall consist of
a welded or bolted steel frame and the necessary sub-weights. Sub-weights shall be held safely
within the frame by approved means to prevent the displacement of the sub weights out of the
steel frame.

Numbers and weights of sub-weights will be determined so that the weight of the counter weight
equal to the weight of the empty car plus 50% of the rated load.

- The sub-weights shall be of cast iron.

3.15 GUIDE SHOES:

Sliding guide shoes shall be securely bolted to the car and counter weight frames at top and bot-
tom. These guide shoes shall run smoothly on guide rails.

Guide rails shall be lubricated by boxes installed above these sliding shoes which full field with oil
to provide continuous lubrication for guide shoes during running.

- It forbidden to use the jaws or safety blocks of the safety gear as guide shoes.

3.16 CAR FRAME AND PLATFORM:

Car frame shall be made of steel members with a factor of safety in compliance with International
Standard a safety device shall be securely fastened to the frame of the car.

Platform shall consist of a frame and floor constructed entirely of suitably reinforced steel mem-
bers. Support frame shall carry rubber bed on which the platform shall rest without any connection
to the steel frame. These pads shall effectively isolate the cob from the frame. Substantial supports
shall be provided for all auxiliary apparatus.

All steel members of the frame shall be protected against rust with prime coat and painting.

3.17 SAFETY DEVICE:

A mechanical safety device shall be actuated by a centrifugal governor placed in the machine room
and connected to the safety tripping mechanism by a continuous governor cable attached to the
car frame and passing over the governor sheaves and a weighted tension sheaves in the pit.

Governor jaws shall grip the rope a minimum time after governor reaches its tripping speed and
shall be held in engagement with the rope by springs and the tension in governor rope may slide
through them after the safety has set, without damage to rope.

Operation of governor on over-speed both in up or down direction shall open a switch discon-
necting the power from the elevator. In the down direction and when the governor is tripping the
safety mechanism due to over speed of car the safety mechanism will engage the rails with suffi-
cient force to stop the car with its rated load in the car. The pressure of the two pairs of jaws on the
rails shall be equalized.

Safety shall be designed such that the jaws engage the rails without inclination in car floor exceed
than 5% from the normal position.

The mechanism shall gradually and smoothly bring the car to stop from governor tripping speed
with an average rate of retardation within the limits given by International Standard for various
loads.

Governor shall be accurately adjusted and with the tripping speed specified in the International
Standard.

To ensure operation of safety device a switch shall be provided to open and disconnect the power
from the elevator when breakage or slacking of the governor robe.

3.18 TERMINAL STOPPING DEVICES:

Provide an upper and lower final limit stopping devices to stop the car automatically from any
speed obtained under normal operation within the top and bottom over travels independent of
any other stopping devices.

Also, additional devices shall be provided and arranged in end floors only to ensure stopping of
cars at these end floor’s level independent of ordinary devices to avoid of over traveling final floor
leveling.

The directional stopping devices shall be provided and arranged to stop over traveling of cars in
case of inspection and maintenance for the safety of labors who works above car during servicing,
these devices do not permit cars to run to the direction of over traveling but allow traveling in the
other direction.

3.19 PIT SAFETY SWITCH:

Provide pit with safety switch accessible from the entrance to the pit. Safety switch shall interrupt
the power supply and hold the car to permit safe access to the pit servicing.
Also, a source of A.C 220V electric power supply should be provided in pit for purpose of mainte-
nance.

3.20 Lighting the shaft

Provide full height the shaft with permanent electric lighting to allow enough illumination inside
shaft during maintenance work or rescue of passengers in emergency, the maximum spacing be-
tween lamps not exceed (7m) in rise.

3.21 Emergency landing devices:

Emergency landing devices with enough set of rechargeable sealed lead acid batteries (Free
maintenance) shall be supplied to move the elevator automatically to the nearest floor safely and
smoothly as soon as the power supply has been failed.

During rescue comfort able riding and landing accuracy should be assured then the doors will
open automatically for evacuation of trapped passengers

The battery charger is the constant voltage, current limiting type to extend battery service life.

Another way for evacuation passengers in emergency by using an external push-buttons for mov-
ing the car to the nearest floor and opening doors then rescue of passengers out of car can be
done.

3.22. Noise:

The noise level measured with the elevator running, one meter at one meter from any point on o
the elevator, shall not exceed 60 dB A.
The abnormal noises or sounds well shall not accepted even if total noises level is below 60 dB A.

2.23 Climatic Conditions

. All elevators shall be capable of operating In the climatic conditions in Cairo:

All electrical equipment, apparatus, materials shall be designed, specified and


De-rated for a continuous and trouble free operation:

Temperature: between 0°C and 50°C,


Relative humidity: between 10% and 85%.

3.24 Accessibility for disabled persons(passenger elevators only):-

- The lift shall be designed for accessibility and use by disabled persons with these features:-
- Self re-leveling accurate stopping at landing levels.
- Braille buttons at car operating panel.
- Voice announcement device.
- Handrails.
- Alarm bell
- Intercom.

The elevator shall be in compliance with international standard/ European code EN 81-70.

3.25 Spare parts

The contractor shall submit a priced list of all spare parts which are necessary and required for
safely and optimum operation of elevators for five years after the guarantee period.

4. Tests, Inspection and Acceptance

4.1 General

• The tests described here under will have to be completed with the tests described in chap-
ters

Comply with European standards EN81-1.

• As described in EN81-1 – annex C, the contractor shall provide a technical report. This re-
port

• shall include as a minimum:

• Generalities

• Names and addresses of contractors, sub-contractors and Organizations;

• Address of installers

• Type of equipment including rated load, nominal speed and the number of passengers;

• Travel distance and the number of levels;

• The weight of the cabin and the counterweight;

• The mass balancing;

• Technical information and drawings of the elevator including dimensions and calculations of

• each part or sub-system.

• Electrical drawings

• Checking compliance including certificate of conformity of each components, calculation

settings of the car safety device

4.2 In-Factory Testing

In-factory inspections and tests, on-site inspections and the trial runs are all designed to prepare
for acceptance.

The inspection procedures the following tests to be carried out:

• Test of the cabin completely assembled with its door.


• Test of the landing door installed in a reservation prefabricated in factory.
• Test of electrical control boxes.
• Test of winding equipment.
• Dimensional checks of all the parts and components.
• Checks for compliance with the standards and technical specifications.
• Electrical test of control box.

The contractor shall submit certificate for all these tests done in the factory.

4.3 Laboratory Tests

These tests aim at checking compliance with the properties required by the technical specification.
The contractor shall deliver to the Organization the test reports produced by a competent officiaL
laboratory.

Each type of material used shall be tested.

4.4 On-Site Inspection

4.4.1 Acceptance

After completion of installation work, each Elevator shall be inspected before being put into ser-
vice, examination and testing shall be in accordance with the EN81-1 – annex D.

This test shall include as a minimum:

• Compliance with the standards;


• Visual test on the good practice for the construction and installation;
• Tests and inspections of each sub-system including locking devices, electrical safety devices,
braking system, suspension cables and pulleys, over speed governor, car and counterweight safety
devices, buffers, …
• Verification of adherence

The contractor shall provide the Organization with all tools, test loads and personnel required to
carry out these tests. If the tests are satisfactory, the certificate of completion of works is signed by
both parties.
Otherwise, the contractor shall take all corrective action necessary.
Operational tests shall be carried out in the presence of all contractors involved.

4.4.2 Provisional Taking Over

At the end of the Experimental Working Period and in view of issuing provisional taking over,
simplified testing of the controls, emergency stop buttons, safeties and operation shall be con-
ducted jointly by the contractor and the Organization.

4.4.3 Checks during the Guarantee Period

The Organization shall assess the quality of the elevator during this period. If necessary, he may
request any modifications or corrective action considered necessary.
For this purpose, elevator shall be examined after six months’ operation.

4.4.4 One year after provisional taking over

A joint inspection shall be carried out to check that none of the reservations made at acceptance
remains valid.
An inspection report shall be prepared indicating:
• The real availability achieved,
• Any major problems encountered.

4.4.5 at final taking over

Elevators shall be inspected to check that the requirements of the standards and contracts have
been satisfied
