In the part 1 of this lesson we have learnt

about the perimeter of a closed figure.

Now in this part we will learn about the
area of a closed figure.
The space occupied by a shape or a
Area of a square of side 1 cm is
closed figure is called its area. Or we can
1 square centimetre ( 1 sq cm) say the surface covered by a figure is
called its area.
Area is measured by small squares called
Area of a square of side 1 m is unit squares.
1 square metre ( 1 sq m) We choose the size of the unit square
according to the size of the area we wish
to measure.
Area of a square of side 1 km is Unit squares may have sides of 1 mm, 1
1 square kilometre ( 1 sq km) cm, 1 m or 1 km.
Area of a Rectangle If the length of a rectangle = 5 cm,
5 squares of 1 cm will fit along its length
If the breadth of a rectangle = 4 cm,
4 squares of 1 cm will fit along its breadth.
5 cm
So the total number of squares = 5 x 4
Or the area of the rectangle = 5 x 4 sq cm
4 cm

area of rectangle = length x breadth

area area
Length = , breadth =
breadth length
Area of a Square

A square is a special rectangle in which

all the sides are equal.

area of square = side x side

1. The side of each square is 1 cm. Find the area of each shaded
part. If more than half of a square is shaded, count it up with
another half. If less than half is shaded, ignore.
(h) (i)

No of squares shaded fully = 6 No of squares shaded fully = 3

No of squares shaded more than half= 4 No of squares shaded more than half= 5
∴ area = 6 + 4 = 10 sq cm ∴ area = 3 + 5 = 8 sq cm
4. Find the area of each rectangle from its length (L) and breadth (B).

(c) L = 15 km, B = 7 km (d) L = 3.7 m, B = 2 m

Area of rectangle = length x breadth Area of rectangle = length x breadth

∴ area = 15 x 7 = 105 sq km ∴ area = 3.7 x 2 = 7.4 sq m

5. Find the length of each rectangle from its area (A) and breadth (B).
Area of rectangle
(d) A = 340 sq m, B = 17 m length =
breadth
340
∴ length = = 20 m
17
6. Find the breadth of each rectangle from its area (A) and length (L).
(c) A = 495 sq cm, L = 33 cm breadth = Area of rectangle
length

495
∴ breadth = = 15 cm
33
7. Find the area of a square of side:

(c) 17 km (e) 35 m

Area of square = side x side Area of square = side x side

∴ area = 17 x 17 = 289 sq km ∴ area = 35 x 35 = 1225 sq m

4. Find the area of each rectangle from its length (L)
and breadth (B).
(a) L = 17 m, B = 12 M
(b) L = 20.5 cm, B = 13 cm
5. Find the length of each rectangle from its area (A) and breadth (B).
(a) A = 375 sq m, B = 10 m
(b) A = 393sq cm, B = 15 cm

6. Find the breadth of each rectangle from its area (A) and length (L).
(a) A = 7500 sq m, L = 150 m
(b) A = 1875 sq km, L = 250 km

7. Find the area of a square of side:

(a) 18 cm (b) 22 m
