Eight major tasks

Havighurst(1972) outlined eight major Psychosocial tasks to be

accomplished during adolescence,as follows:

Developmental tasks-are the skills,knowledge,functions,and attitudes

that individuals have to acquire at certain points in their lives in order to
function effectively and mature persons.

1.Accepting one’s physique and using the body effectively

Adolescents become extremely self-conscious about the changes

occurring in the bodies at puberty. Adolescents are concerned about body
build, image, and appearance. They need to understand the patterns of
growth of their own bodies, to accept their own physiques, to care for their
health, and use their body effectively in athletics, recreation, work, and
everyday tasks

Achieving emotional independence from parents and other adults

Some Adolescents are too emotionally dependent on their parents; others

are estranged from their parents. Part of the task of growing up is to
achieve autonomy from parents and establish adult relationships with
them at the same time.Adolescents who are rebellious and in conflict with
their parents need help in understanding the situation and learning how to
improve it.

3.Achieving a masculine or feminine social -sex role

4.Achieving new and more mature relations with age mates of

both sexes

One of the tasks of adolescents is to establish heterosexual friendships,as

opposed to the same sex friendship that are more prevalent in middle
childhood. Maturing also means developing the social skills necessary to
get along with others and to participate in social groups.

5.Desiring and achieving socially responsible behavior

6.Acquiring a set of values and an ethical system as a guide to

behavior.

This goal includes the development, adoption, and application of

meaningful values, morals, and ideals in one’s personal life.

7.Preparing for an economic career.

8.Preparing for marriage and social life

The majority of youths consider a happy marriage and parenthood to be

important goals in life. However, they need to develop the social
skills,positive attitudes,emotional maturity,objective knowledge,and
empathetic understanding to make marriage work. This preparation and
development begins in adolescence.
