LESSON:
The French Revolution of 1789 , is one of the most important events in European history. It had a great effect
on France, Europe and the rest of the world.
POLITICAL CAUSE:
King Louis XVI was an absolute monarch. He replaced hundreds of people in jail and killed others. Nobles
had all the power. There was no democracy. In addition, Louis XVI’s wife, Marie Antoinette was very
unpopular with the French because she spent a lot of money and she was a German.
SOCIAL CAUSE:
There were three class of people in France. –Estate General
The First Estate was the church members of the Church and paid no taxes. The Church owned 20% of
the land.
The Second Estate were the nobles. They had all the best jobs in the country and owned most of the
land. They also paid no taxes.
The Third Estate was made up of 97% of the people (peasants, workers, middle class). They had no
special rights. They did pall all the taxes.
ECONOMIC CAUSE:
The Third Estate had to pay all the taxes, even though the nobles and the Church had the most of the wealth.
In addition the country was broke because Louis XVI spent so much.
Louis XVI asked the Estate General (French Parliament) for more money. Since each class was equal in
the Estate-General, the First and the Second Estate joined together and voted 2-1 to tax the Third Estate.
The Third Estate to accept the vote.
They left the Estate-General and went to a Tennis Court where they promised to change France and
make it democratic (Tennis Court Oath).
Stories began that Louis XVI was calling out the army to arrest the members of the Third Estate at the
Tennis Court. Thousand of French attacked the Bastille and capture it. That date was July 14, 1989, and
it is known as Bastille Day in France. It is the day the French Revolution started.

Lesson 2:
The French Revolution and the Reign of Terror
Before long a great fear swept over Paris and into the countryside. Peasants became outlaws
by destroying the homes of the nobles.
Thousands of Parisian women rioting over the price of bread marched to the Palace of
Versailles and broke in.
At first, rival European monarchs welcomed the weakening of the French king, but as chaos
escalated they feared revolutions in their own country.
The royal family tried to escape from France but they were captured. (Austria and Prussia
threatened to destroyed Paris if the royal family was harmed)
The new French legislators decided to declare war on Austria and Prussia.
The revolutionaries responded by imprisoning the royal family and murdering thousands of
French prisoners who were rumored to break out and help them.
The National Convention convicted Louis XVI of treason (crimes against nation) and
sentenced him to death. In January 1793 he was killed by a machine called guillotine.
As time passed more and more people accused being against rebellion were killed. Over 2000
people were executed by guillotine.
.
A new regime-The Directory- takes power in France in 1795. The internal political situation remains unstable,
but is silenced by the army, now led by a young general named Napoleon Bonaparte. There follows a period of
successes in war.
9 November 1799- Napoleonic ear begins
The Directory’s four years in power are failure, with them ceding much power to the military to maintain order.
On 9 November 1799, as frustration with their leadership reaches, Bonaparte stages a coup d’état, abolishing
the Directory and appointing himself France “first consul’. This marks the end of the French Revolution and the
start of the Napoleonic era
