EXPERIMENT 2: FINENESS MODULUS OF FINE AND COARSE

AGGREGATES
AIM: To determine fineness modulus of fine aggregate and coarse aggregate.
THEORY:
Coarse aggregate and fine aggregate can be classified based on particle size.
Coarse aggregate - 75 mm to 4.75 mm
Fine aggregate - 4.75 mm to 0.075 mm
 Effective size is the maximum particle size of the smallest 10% of the aggregate/ it is
the sieve opening corresponding to which 10% of the material is finer (D10).
 The ratio of the maximum size of the smallest 60% to that of the effective size is called
uniformity coefficient (Cu). Cu = D60/D10
 Fineness modulus is an index number which represents the mean size of particles.
 It is obtained by summing the cumulative percentage of weight retained on the different
sieves and then dividing it by 100.
Use of fineness modulus:
 The coarse aggregate and fine aggregate are mixed in definite proportions in mix design
to make concrete. The better the grading of the aggregates better is the quality of
concrete. Therefore, we can calculate the fineness modulus of the coarser and finer
fractions and combine them to obtain the fineness modulus of the combined aggregate.
X = [(F2-F)/(F-F1)].100
X = % of fine aggregate to be mixed with coarse aggregate
F1=Fineness Modulus of fine aggregate, F2=Fineness Modulus of coarse aggregate,
F=Fineness modulus of combined aggregate
APPARATUS:
1. A set of Indian Standard (IS) sieves:
a) For fine aggregate- 4.75 mm, 2.36 mm,1.18 mm, 600 micron, 300 micron, 150 micron, 75
micron
b) For coarse aggregate-100mm, 80 mm, 40 mm, 20 mm, 10 mm, 4.75 mm.
2. Weighing balance (accurate to 0.1% of the total weight of the sample)
3. Sieve shaker
PROCEDURE:
For fine aggregate:
1. Take 1 kg of aggregate as sample.
2. The sample shall be brought to an air-dry condition before weighing and sieving. This may
be achieved either by drying at room temperature or by heating at a temperature of 100⁰C to
110°C.
3. Arrange the IS sieves in descending order from 4.75 mm up to 75 micron.
4. Place the aggregate on the top sieve, close the lid and begin sieving either manually or with
the help of mechanical shaker. Sieving should be carried out for at least 10 minutes.
5. Find the weight of sample retained in every sieve.
6. Calculate the cumulative percentage of weight retained on the various sieves.
For course aggregate:
The same steps are repeated as above but with sieve sizes in descending order from 100 mm to
4.75 mm.
RESULTS:
1) Fineness Modulus = (Sum of cumulative percentage of weight of sample retained on the
different sieves/100)
