Characteristics of A Good Community Leader
Characteristics of A Good Community Leader
terms of individual background experiences, such as different jobs, roles, areas, and so on.
Before talking about a person’s personality and characteristics, it is important to understand
“what person is that”, particularly what represents being a good community leader according to
the topic. Mostly, people believe that a good community leader has inspirable and influenced
auras and should be the representative of a community by the people(Samanta, n.d.). In this
essay, it will be explored the characteristics of a good community leader from the perspective of
3 areas; what a good community leader holds essential abilities in the workplace, how he
communicates with people, and his values on moral practices.
To begin with, a good community leader has these capacities: a good understanding of
coworkers and partners, a positive reception of diverse ideas, and clarity in delivering
information in the workplace and projects, resulting in a positive atmosphere for his community
members. Firstly, a good community leader generally knows his partners' strengths and
weaknesses that drive to eliminate the team’s difficulties according to essential skills needed for
the accomplishment of targeted goals and achievements within a period. For example, he can
give relevant positions and jobs to his community workers not only to enjoy working for the
respective people but also to find out their interesting fields by developing skills and
understanding the procedures of each work for a good future. In addition, positive reception of
diverse ideas is also an ability kept in a community leader. A good organizer always accepts
different views and perspectives through his co-workers and community members for the best
solution and outcome, and it brings an inclusive environment between workers and a leader.
According to my past experiences in community work, particularly teaching spectrum, I worked
with different organizers and leaders for some time in developing community education. Some
leaders are more likely to obey the rules and regulations said someone instead of listening to
their partners’ needs and wants which leads to tensions and conflicts between leaders and their
partners. On the other hand, a good community leader never goes through one-sided decisions
and opinions even if it is decided by someone higher position until it is discussed by his team
members for the well-being of everybody. Moreover, a good community leader can deliver his
speech and directions concisely to his workers because he is a person who understands the
procedures of projects and knows the positive effects of talking in clear and short to the point.
By doing this, followers and workers are confident working with their community leader,
whatever the situation is difficult to handle, they will not stop to go through it because of their
leader’s clear vision and mission in moving forward. These capacities can be seen in a good
community leader in shaping a happy work environment and achieving work goals.
When it comes to communication, there are three items; effective use of active listening,
empathy, and adaptability for various audiences—that are noticeable in a good community
leader. Initially, a good community leader realizes the effectiveness of using active listening in
community discussion finding the best solutions for problems and issues through the
participants. The benefits of active listening drive him to build strong relationships with
community members, and it affects positively not only him but also the community that he
serves in forming cultural events and practising respective community standards. Next, a good
community leader holds an empathetic attitude toward his community in resolving issues. For
instance, when there is an issue that can be done for the common benefit, however, if there is
someone identified as a minority can be disadvantaged by this solution, then a good community
leader will think twice because his value is the well-being of people compared to their goals and
achievements. Another thing adaptability represents for the resilience of a good community
leader is how many loads and how much pressure can be controlled by his ability even when
facing complicated work and unexpected challenges. The reason I want to highlight this point is
related to accountability and responsibility because some leaders tend to go away from their
work without communicating when projects and work are beyond their capacities. On the other
hand, a good community leader never leaves his community and works even if the situation
becomes worse, and he will take full responsibility for the betterment of his community members
and continue communication with community members regardless of his reputation and dignity.
These skills and practices are only possessed by a good community leader from the perspective
of communication with people from my own point of view.
Lastly, a good community leader values strong moral practices that make unique of his identity
among various community leaders. Strong moral practices are values of transparency and
justice that are a must for a good community leader from my perspective. To commence with,
transparency plays a pivotal role in decision-making processes and allocating resources to its
community well-being. And also it involves sharing correct information among the team
members and being responsible for decisions for unexpected outcomes and difficulties. Keeping
this transparency and being honest with people leads to a united community which a good
community wants. When it comes to justice, it is intended for not only procedures but also
fairness in treating community members and residents regardless of identities, religions, and
political inclines. For example, a good community leader can manage inequalities of resource
allocations and initiate choices commonly agreed decisions filled with diverse backgrounds and
perspectives through community members. These practices foster creating an inclusive
environment where community members feel inclusive and valued.
In conclusion, the characteristics of a good community leader include both personality and
essential skills that not only facilitate effective leadership in management but also in promoting
an inclusive community. Enjoying with team members in the workplace and listening to others'
voices carefully shows the characteristics of a good community leader, and holding values for
community well-being in a sustainable way and lasting positive impacts.
