POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM

- Overhead wires or third rail for

delivering electric power to trains.

- Substations for converting and

distributing high voltage AC/DC power.

CIRCUIT BREAKER

In electric traction, a circuit breaker is a

safety device that automatically
interrupts or breaks the electrical circuit
when there is a fault or abnormal current
flow.

It helps protect the traction system from

damage caused by short circuits or
overloads, ensuring the safety of both
the equipment and passengers

TRACTION TRANSFORMERS
- Traction transformers to adjust voltage
levels for the motors.

- In railway traction, transformers are

devices that change the voltage of
electrical power. They are used to
convert high voltage from the power
supply system (overhead wires or third
rail) to a level suitable for the electric
motors in the locomotive.

MAIN LINE CONVERTER
(RECTIFIER + INVERTER)
In a traction system, the main rectifier
and inverter serve crucial roles in
managing electrical power.

Main Rectifier
- The main rectifier converts AC
(alternating current) power into DC
(direct current). This is used to control
the power required for different traction
Subsystems/inverters.

@Babu Mamidi
Main Inverter
- The inverter, on the other hand, is
responsible for converting DC power
back into AC. This is necessary because
electric motors, especially those in
modern trains, often operate on AC
power. The inverter ensures that the
correct type of electrical power is
supplied to the motors for efficient
operation.

@Babu Mamidi
AUXILIARY POWER SYSTEMS &
CONVERTER

- Systems for providing power to

auxiliary functions in the train, such as
lighting, cooling , charging and heating.

- Similar to auxiliary rectifier+ inverter

set will be there to supply required power
to auxiliary subsystems.

TRACTION MOTORS & TRACTION
MOTOR CONVERTER
- Traction motors convert electrical
power into mechanical motion to drive
the wheels of a vehicle, providing the
necessary propulsion. Traction motors
can be DC type or AC type.
DC Traction Motors
- Direct current (DC) traction motors
are simpler in design and have
historically been widely used in electric
locomotives.

@Babu Mamidi
AC Traction Motors
- Alternating current (AC) traction
motors have become more prevalent due
to their efficiency and better control
capabilities. They are often used with
inverters to convert DC power from the
overhead lines into AC. Normally three
phase induction motor used as they are
efficient & High starting torque.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING

- Many traction motors support

regenerative braking, where the motor
acts as a generator during braking,
converting kinetic energy back into
electrical energy, which can be fed back
into the power supply system Or
generated energy will be dissipated as
heat in resistors.

BATTERIES

-Batteries help manage power demands

more effectively, allowing for optimal
distribution and utilization of energy
during varying operational conditions. It's
used as power backup system & storage
system while in regenerative braking.
Batteries helps the maintain the voltage
stability.

@Babu Mamidi
CONTROL AND COMMUNICATION

- Control systems for managing train

speed, braking, and direction. Typical
PWM (Pulse width Modulation)
techinique used to better control of
electric power.
- Communication systems for signaling
and coordination.

@Babu Mamidi
MONITORING AND MAINTENANCE

- Systems for monitoring the health of

traction components.

- Maintenance equipment for regular

checks and repairs.
