TRACTION TRANSFORMERS
- Traction transformers to adjust voltage
levels for the motors.

MAIN LINE CONVERTER
(RECTIFIER + INVERTER)
In a traction system, the main rectifier
and inverter serve crucial roles in
managing electrical power.
Main Rectifier
- The main rectifier converts AC
(alternating current) power into DC
(direct current). This is used to control
the power required for different traction
Subsystems/inverters.

Main Inverter
- The inverter, on the other hand, is
responsible for converting DC power
back into AC. This is necessary because
electric motors, especially those in
modern trains, often operate on AC
power. The inverter ensures that the
correct type of electrical power is
supplied to the motors for efficient
operation.

TRACTION MOTORS & TRACTION
MOTOR CONVERTER
- Traction motors convert electrical
power into mechanical motion to drive
the wheels of a vehicle, providing the
necessary propulsion. Traction motors
can be DC type or AC type.
DC Traction Motors
- Direct current (DC) traction motors
are simpler in design and have
historically been widely used in electric
locomotives.

AC Traction Motors
- Alternating current (AC) traction
motors have become more prevalent due
to their efficiency and better control
capabilities. They are often used with
inverters to convert DC power from the
overhead lines into AC. Normally three
phase induction motor used as they are
efficient & High starting torque.
