Activity Sheet
The learner represents an exponential function through its: (a) table of values, (b) graph, and
(c) equation.

Exponential Function – one of the non-algebraic function that exist between a dependent
and independent variable. When 𝑏 is any constant not equal to 1 is greater than zero an
exponential function can be written as 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑏 𝑥 .

Graphs of Exponential Functions

The Properties of the exponential function 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑏 𝑥 are as follows:
1. The domain is the set of all real numbers.
2. The range is the set of positive real numbers.
3. The function is increasing when 𝑏 > 1 and for 0 < 𝑏 < 1.
4. The y-intercept of the graph is 1.
5. The x-axis is an asymptote of the graph.
6. The function is one-to-one.

Activity 1
DIRECTIONS: Identify the base of the following functions and evaluate each at 𝑥 = 0, 1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 2
a. y = 5x b. 𝑓 𝑥 = 7𝑥 c. 𝑔 𝑥 = 8𝑥

Activity 2
DIRECTIONS: Graph the following pairs of functions, you may use graphing calculators
(DESMOS or GeoGebra) copy and complete the tables with the correct information.
1. 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 and 𝑓 𝑥 = 2−𝑥
2. 𝑓 𝑥 = −2𝑥 and 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥
3. 𝑓 𝑥 = −2−𝑥 − 1 and 𝑓 𝑥 = 2−𝑥

𝑥 0 1 2 3
𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥

𝑓 𝑥 = 2−𝑥

Function Domain Range y-intercept x-intercept Asymptote

𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥

𝑓 𝑥 = 2−𝑥

Activity Sheet
The learner solves exponential equations and exponential inequalities.

Exponential function is a function of the form 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑏 𝑥 . b is called the base

where 𝑏 > 0 but not equal to 1
Exponential equations an equation which includes a variable in the exponent
or an equation involving exponential expressions.
Exponential inequality, an inequality involving exponential ex-pressions.

The following laws of exponents are helpful in solving exponential equations/inequalities:

𝒙𝟏 = 𝒙 𝒙𝟎 = 𝟏 𝒙𝒎 𝒙𝒏 = 𝒙𝒎+𝒏
𝟏 𝟏
𝒙−𝟏 = 𝒙−𝒏 = 𝒙𝒎 𝒏
= 𝒙𝒎∙𝒏
𝒙 𝒙𝒏
𝒂 𝒎 𝒂𝒎
= 𝒃𝒎
𝒃

To solve exponential equations and inequalities.

1. Write both sides of the equation or inequality as powers of the same base.
2. Equate the exponents.
3. Collect like terms
4. Combine similar terms
5. Check

Activity Proper
DIRECTIONS: Solve the following exponential equations or inequality. Show your organized solutions
using the two-column proof.

1. 2𝑥 = 83 6. 4x+3 = 25

7. 2 9x−3 = 162
1 x+2
2. 25x−3 = 125
8. 62x+1 = 63x−2
3. 42x+6 = 642x−4
9. 4x+3 > 82x−3
4. 162x−3 = 8
10. 53𝑥+2 = 625
5. 32x−4 = 35x+8
