TASK 3
A surface pump delivers fuel oil of specific gravity 0.84 through a 500ft long, 3.5in diameter
pipe (absolute roughness = 0.0025ft) to a tank 12ft higher than the level of the supply tank. If the
oil is delivered at 0.5𝑓𝑡 3 /𝑠𝑒𝑐, estimate:
(a) The flow velocity
(b) The Reynolds number and characterise the flow
(c) The pressure heads due to friction loss and that due to acceleration
(d) The pump power rating (horsepower) if it is 85% efficient
(e) The shear stress along the wall of the pipe.
[Take the absolute viscosity of fuel = 0.003𝑙𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑐/𝑓𝑡 2 , mass density of water 𝜌𝑤 =
1.94 𝑠𝑙𝑢𝑔𝑠/𝑓𝑡 3 and g = 32.2𝑓𝑡/sec2 ]
TASK 4
A flowing vertical well 5540ft of 2.875in tubing in the hole is completed without a casing packer.
The well is producing 30oAPI gravity clean oil at 625𝑆𝑡𝑏/𝑑𝑎𝑦 against a casing head pressure of
780psig. Fluid properties relations at the temperature are as follows:
𝑅𝑠 = 0.230p+20 𝑆𝑐𝑓/𝑆𝑡𝑏, 𝐵𝑜 = 0.0001p+1.02 𝑟𝑏/𝑆𝑡𝑏, 𝐵𝑔 = 6.2p−1.17 𝑓𝑡 3 /𝑆𝑐𝑓. If the GOR of
the well is 460Scf/Stb and the gas gravity is 0.6, determine the pressure in the tubing at a depth
of 4940ft.
TASK 5
The liquid holdup of a two-phase flow in a 6in pipe was measured to be 0.45. If the specific
weights of the liquid and gas are 58 𝑙𝑏𝑚𝑓𝑡 −3 and 5 𝑙𝑏𝑚𝑓𝑡 −3 and their superficial velocities are
0.4ft/sec and 3.0ft/sec respectively. Determine the following:
(a) 𝜌𝑠 , 𝜌𝑛 and 𝜌𝑘 in 𝑠𝑙𝑢𝑔𝑠/𝑓𝑡 3
(b) The liquid and gas flow rates
(c) The phase (in situ) velocities
(d) The slip velocity and the slip ratio
(e) The no-slip holdups.
