Course Description
Production and Operations Management (POM) focuses on carefully managing the
processes to produce and distribute products and services. Major functions of POM inlcude
Managing purchases, Inventory control, and Quality control, Storage, Logistics and Evaluations.
The emphasis is on decision making (to include business ethics) in operational areas such as:
facility requirements and utilization, control and coordination of resource inputs and outputs,
types of transformation/conversion processes, and performance measurements.

Course Objectives
The course will have the following objectives:
1. To understand the strategic role of operations management in creating and enhancing a
firm’s competitive advantages;
2. Understand key concepts and issues of OM in both manufacturing and service
organizations;
3. Understand the interdependence of the operations function with the other key functional
areas of a firm; and
4. Apply analytical skills and problem-solving tools to the analysis of the operations
problems.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able:


1. To have understood the operation management role in increasing firms competitive
advantage through efficient management of resources;
2. To have understood and demonstrate the ability to use business tools in order to
overcome the issues in manufacturing and services sector organizations;
3. To have understood the importance of communication and demonstrate the ability to
communicate effectively; and
4. To have understood the ability to apply knowledge of business concepts and functions in
an integrated manner and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in teams and/or
groups. Apply knowledge of fundamental concepts of operations management in order to
improve operational performance.

Assessment and Grading


Mid-Term examination 30%
Final-Term Exam 70%
