Quick Start Instructions for

The Piecewise Practice Planner

Before beginning the quick start steps, be sure you have your Piecewise
Practice Planner worksheet handy. I’ve included two identical pages for
easy double-sided printing. Or to save paper, feel free to edit the
document right on your computer or mobile device!

1. List the pieces you plan to work on at the top. There are
enough spaces for five pieces or exercises, but if you’re working on
more than that you can always use a second worksheet, or to
save paper simply draw a line down the middle of as many
columns as necessary to instantly create twice as many columns!
2. At the bottom write your goal dates and goals for
each piece. The Final date is the performance date, or any date
by which you wish to have your piece goals accomplished. Tempo
is the date by which you want it up to tempo, and Notes is the
date by which you wish to have the notes learned. The goals for
each piece are either by measure (learn through measure X) or a
tempo goal (quarter note = X bpm).
3. Write the practice dates in the left column. This way
you know exactly which days you will do what. Remember to
consider what days you may take off from practice and skip those
dates!
4. Fill in your daily goals for each piece for the next 30
practice days. Keep this consistent with the goals you set for
each piece in the bottom row regarding whether to make these
goals by measure or by tempo. To do this, divide the measures or
tempo increase by the amount of practice days you have.
5. Practice and check off the days as you go and see
how quickly you improve! The squares to the left of each
assignment box are for checking off when complete. Feels good!
