Worldview Grading Procedure

-Each student will get a sheet of paper that will function as a checklist for their time in this
course. The student will keep this at all time, be docked participation points of this is lost, and
will bring it to every class and individual meeting with me. This sheet of paper is the Thesis
process for each student. Every meeting, reading, and checkpoint has a value for the student,
and the course will be run in phases. A student MAY NOT move on to the next phase unless I
have signed off (literally) on their sheet and given them the go-ahead.
-The Thesis process for each student is a term we use that encapsulates the four phases of
Worldview. The process begins in preliminary research (Phase 1) that ends with a provisional
thesis, then moves into understanding (Phase 2) which culminates in the working, detailed
outline, then argumentation (Phase 3) which is completed with the submission of the 3-4 page
writing sample, and the process comes to an end with the presentation (Phase 4) and
submission of the final paper.
-For Worldview, there are two tracks that each student will move down (not by choice, but based
on their work). The A-track is completed by moving through Phases 1-4 and presenting in class
or during an SRT in the library in front of peers and faculty, along with this the A-track student
will be exempt from the final writing responses. The B-track student is for any student that does
not complete the process through Phase 3 (Writing sample). This student will be required to
complete their thesis paper, the final writing responses for Worldview, but will NOT be
presenting in front of their peers.
-The goal of the presentation is not to defend one’s ideas, be grilled with questions, and/or cause
an insurmountable anxiety to form in their soul. The festival is called such because it is a time of
celebration, where the students and faculty come together and engage in thoughtful discussion
and critique of a student who has worked hard and gone through the process of putting together
a thesis argument that might be shared with the community. Presenting one’s ideas was never
meant to be an “I have to do this” thing, but it has always been meant to be viewed as an “I get to
do this” thing. Presenting and engaging in dialogue about ideas is an honor, and this is an
attempt to treat it as such.
-Grading scale: The grading scale for Worldview is the same as it is at Covenant. Here is where
the grading will be different for Worldview. The highest possible grade for each phase is as
follows:
Phase 1→ 68.3% (82/120 points)
Phase 2→ 83% (100/120 points)
Phase 3→ 92% (110/120 points)
Phase 4→ 100% (120/120 points)
Please note that these are not their grades, but the highest possible grade. This means that the
student who only completes Worldview through Phase 2 can can only possibly get an 83% (B-) in
the course if they get full credit for all other work. This student’s grade might be lower
depending on their scores on other work.
-The reason for this is because the course is being graded based on the students going through
the thesis process. Based on the standards and grading rubric of the course (see above) if the
student has not put in the work necessary to move onto the next phase, then they are not
completing the standards set for the course. Instead, students who show they have not gone
through the thesis process will be required to provide evidence of their completion of the course
standards by other means (thesis paper and the final Worldview response questions). Students
who excel and move through the thesis process will be rewarded by being exempt from the final.
