GWL3O SUMMATIVE – ELECTRONIC CAREER PORTFOLIO: Overview

For this project, you will create a portfolio that you will be able to use in real life!
A portfolio is not just a list of your background and accomplishments, it is an expansion of your resume; it
shows your prospective employer the evidence of what you’ve outlined in your resume.
Carefully read all instructions so that you include ALL necessary components!
Hopefully after you finish your portfolio for this course, you keep it—and you keep adding to it and changing
it. A portfolio is never completed!
A well‐targeted portfolio that is properly presented can be a great self‐marketing tool for five main reasons:
1. It draws attention to the key information you want to convey about yourself.
2. It provides links that connect you with an opportunity.
3. It makes the key intangibles tangible.
4. It adds to your credibility.
5. It builds confidence.

Learning expectations being met in this task are:

The student will:
- Explain the benefits of the portfolio process as a strategy for directing the management of their own
learning
- Describe the purpose and content of both comprehensive portfolios and targeted portfolios
- Select and organize documentation from various sources to develop their comprehensive or targeted
portfolio
- Explain their choices of specific portfolio items as evidence of selected knowledge, skills, and personal
accomplishments
- Communication appropriately with various audiences and in various situations
- Summarize the results of their career-related research, using a variety of presentation formats, and
document them in their portfolio

Requirements
A complete portfolio must include the following:
- Hosted on an online portfolio host, or emailed in one folder with clear file names as labels (e.g., A –
Careers, B – Schools, C – High school plan). Check with your instructor for the best method.
- The following sections or files:
o Careers that interest me
o Schools that interest me
o High school education plan
o Career preparation
o Activities and abilities AND artifacts (at least 10)
o Resume and sample cover letter
o Evidence
o Summary
o Bibliography

- The completion of this project is ongoing throughout the course. Discuss due dates for each section
with your course instructor to help keep you on-track. Unit 4 has a few larger assignments, so do not
leave this all to the end of the course!
Section A: Careers that interest me
Log in to http://careerinsite.alberta.ca/careerinsite/know-yourself.aspx and complete the quizzes for career
suggestions. Browse career information in the “Explore Options” tab. (Save information in the “My Career” tab
for quick reference as you go.) In the lesson links for the portfolio, you’ll find Career Info, which has a list of
links to good career research sites.
- Make a list of your top three careers.

- Answer the following questions in complete sentences, under a subheading “Analysis Questions”:

1. As you were determining the careers of interest to you, what criteria influenced you most?
2. Where do you think this influence came from? (Family, experiences, school, a mentor, etc.) Are they
internal or external influences?

Section B: Schools that interest me

Now you need to decide on some schools that will get you to your selected careers.
- For each career from Section A, choose three schools (a total of nine) that interest you.

- Under the heading “analysis Questions”, answer the following in complete sentences:

1. What factors were most important in choosing the schools?

Adapted from C. Morton, M.Ed.

2. If you were asked to give some advice to improve the postsecondary school system, what would it be
and why?

Section C: High School Education Plan

The next step is to investigate and complete your high school education plan. Based on the programs you
selected in Sections A and B, find out what courses you need to take in order to have the appropriate
prerequisites.
- List the courses you need to take for each program you selected. What grades do you need to achieve?

- Under the heading “Analysis Questions”, answer the following in complete sentences:

1. How much have you taken advantage of your school guidance centre in developing your education
plan during your high school career?
2. What suggestions for change would you give your school guidance centre?

Section D: Activities and Abilities

Here you will analyze yourself for your strengths and what you could offer to employers.
- Complete Part 1 of the Summative Worksheet for this section of your project.

- Under the heading “Analysis Questions”, answer the following in complete sentences:

1. What activity or hobby do you feel has prepared you the most for a possible career? How?

Section E: Resume and cover letter

For this section, you need to develop an up-to-date resume and a sample cover letter responding to a real job
ad (attach the ad). Follow the tips provided in the Unit 4 lessons on these topics. Submit these to your
instructor for feedback before your hand them in as part of the summative project.

Section F: Evidence
You will use Part 2 of the worksheet to compile your evidence.
- Include photos or images of your artifacts.
- Make sure to complete the reflection questions.
- Submit the worksheet for evaluation as well.

Section G: Summary
Your last file will be a reflection piece in which you discuss the following in complete paragraphs:
1. How has developing this portfolio prepared you for leaving high school and moving on to the next
stage in life?
2. How has this course helped prepare you for the next stage in life?

Section H: Bibliography

Provide a list of resources that you used in your research.
