Masquerade of death annotations

1. Read death is inescapable- the gruesome symptoms and quick death are reminders it's

beyond human control.

2. Prospero pride in isolation- thinking he can avoid death, the prince isolates himself from

nobles and his people.

3. Indifference to suffering- Prospero's seclusion shows his indifference to suffering and his

choice of comfort over compassion.

4. The Fortiefed Abbey- the iron gates and barred windows symbolize his attempt to control

his fate and life.

5. Lavish Entertainment- Prospero provides endless entertainment hinting at his belief that

luxury can keep fear and death at bay.

6. The seven rooms- The placement of the rooms represents the stages of life

7. Color symbolism- the colors of each room intensify, making a visual journey to death

Prospero ignores

8. The Ebony Clock- The clock symbolizes the ever-approaching death

9. Guests' reaction to the clock- the guests grow fearful at each chime seeing mortality

10. The forbidden black room- avoided by guests for the sinister aura symbolizes death

inevitable dominance of death.
