Chapter 9 Friction

1. Why do we slip when we step on a banana peel?

Ans. The surface of the banana peel is so smooth that having very less friction,
and the frictional force applied is less too. So, when we step on the
banana peel, our feet don't stop and slips forward, making us fall.

2. What is meant by static friction?

Ans. The force required to overcome the friction at the instant when object
starts moving from rest is a measure of static friction.

3. Can we reduce friction to zero by polishing or applying large

amount of lubricant?

Ans. No , we cannot have zero friction surfaces . Even if we use a lot of

lubricants , the friction will be reduced but can never be reduced to
zero because every surface will still have minor irregularities in them.

4. What is easier – to move an object from rest or to move it is already

in motion.

Ans. It is easy to move an object already in motion than when it is at rest

because the stationary object is having static friction, A moving object
has already overcome this additional friction. Sliding and rolling friction
is less than the static friction.

5. Explain why the surface of mortar and pestle (silbatta) used for
grinding is etched again after prolonged use?

Ans. After prolonged use, the mortar and pestle (silbatta) lose the roughness,
due to which frictional force reduces and it does not work properly. To
make it more effective etching becomes necessary because etching
provides it more friction.
6. Is there a force of friction between the wheels of a moving train and
iron rails? If yes, name the type of friction. If an air cushion can be
introduced between the wheel and the rail, what effect will it have
on the friction?

Ans. Yes, there exists a rolling force between the wheels of a moving train and
iron rails. If an air cushion is introduced between the wheel and the rails,
the friction will decrease.

7. List few instances to show friction is an evil.

Ans. Three examples to illustrate that friction is a necessary evil are as follows:

i. Vehicles' tyres wear out due to friction, but without the friction, a
vehicle won't be able to move on a road. Our shoes' wear soles wear
ii. out from walking and running due to the friction offered by the
ground, but without the friction, we won't be able to run and walk.
iii. The machine parts in a machine wear out and get damaged because of
friction, but without the friction between machine parts, the machine
won't produce its desired output.

8. Give two examples of cases where rolling friction is used to make

work easier.

Ans. There are lot of example like -

i. Movement of wheels in automobiles
ii. Ball bearing in cycle.
iii. When we pull our large suitcases on wheels,
iv. Football can cover long distances by rolling than sliding.
v. Use of ball bearings in fans and bicycle.
