Lesson 7- Writing the Reaction Paper

What is a Reaction Paper?

Reaction Paper is a form of paper writing in which the writer expresses his ideas and
opinions about what has been read or seen.
Despite the fact that you are writing about your reactions, thoughts and impressions,
you still need to follow an appropriate structure.

Guidelines in Writing a Reaction Paper

1. Understand the Assignment

Make sure you understand what is being asked of you. Know whether you're supposed
to write a personal reflection, a critical analysis, or a combination of both.

2. Thoroughly Read or Watch the Material

Whether it is a book, article, or a film, make sure to read or watch it very carefully.
Sometimes, you will need to repeat this procedure for a couple of times.

3. Craft a Strong Thesis Statement

Your thesis should reflect your overall reaction to the work. It should summarize your
opinion or perspective in one or two sentences.

4. Structure Your Reaction Paper Properly

The structure of your paper should include the following sections:

A. Introduction
Start by introducing the work you are reacting to, including its title, author, and brief
background or context.

B. Summary of the Material

Provide a concise and accurate summary of the material. This section should be
objective and free of personal opinions.

C. Personal Reaction/Analysis
This is the core of your paper. Discuss how the material affected you and your thoughts
on it.

D. Support Your Reaction with Evidence

Use examples, quotes, or references from the material to back up your opinions.
E. Conclusion

Offer any final thoughts, suggestions, or implications for future research or discussion.

5. Use Formal and Clear Language

Even though a reaction paper can be personal, it’s important to maintain a formal tone,
especially in academic settings.

6. Be Objective and Respectful

Even when you disagree with the work or feel strongly about it, keep your criticism
constructive and respectful.

7. Proofread and Revise

After completing your first draft, take time to revise and proofread.

8. Format the Paper Correctly

Follow any specific formatting guidelines provided by your instructor or institution, such
as font size, margins, and citation style.

Why do we need to write a Reaction Paper?

Writing a reaction paper serves several important purposes, both academically and
personally. It helps develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deeper
understanding of the material.
