Re: Concrete Mixture Design Submittal for 31MPa Footings, Columns and Walls, Beams and
elevated slabs and slabs on ground.

Dear Sir:

This letter outlines the information developed and compiled for the Portland cement concrete
mixture design intended to be used for the project which require a minimum compressive strength
of 37 Mpa for Footings, Columns and Walls, Beams and elevated slabs and slab on ground.

The concrete mixture is expected to be placed using a concrete pump and consolidated using
internal vibrators. This is non-air entrained concrete mixture with the following criteria:
1. Minimum Compressive Strength (f’c): 37 MPa at 28 days.
2. Maximum Water-Cementitious Materials Ratio: 0.60.
3. Minimum Cementitious Materials Content: 350 kg/m3.
4. Slump Limit: maximum 200 mm

Closing

We appreciate the opportunity and look forward to continued involvement with this project.

Very Respectfully

MUHIRWA Raymond, Civil Engineering

A- 4 TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING

Characteristic Strength of Concrete (Cube) = 37 N/mm2
Standard Deviation (sd) = 4,5 N/mm2
Therefore, Target strength (fck+1.96 x sd)=37+ (1.96 x 4.5) = 45,8 N/mm2 EN 206 Annex H- H.2

A -5 SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

Maximum Water cement Ratio as per BS EN 206 Table F.1 = 0,60
Based on experience, Adopt water - cement ratio as = 0,35
0,35< 0,6 Hence O.K.
A-6 SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT
From Table 20.47 ( DOE Method) & 100 - 180mm Slump = 225,00 Kgs.
Estimated water content = 225,00 Kgs.
Based on Trial with superplasticizer water content reduction of 31 percent can be expected. Hence, the reduced water
content =225 x69% = 155,25 Kgs. say 155

A-7 CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Adopted Water cement ratio = 0,35
Cementitious content 443,6 kg/cum kg/cum Say 450,0 Kgs/Cum
Cementitious composition Cement, % 80,0 Fly ash,% 20,0
360 Kgs 90 Kgs
As Per Tender documents P-III.02, minimum cement content = 350 kg/cum
360> 350 Hence O.K.
Therefore, Adopted Cementitious Content = 450 Kgs/Cum
And Water Content = 157,5 Kgs. say 156

A-8 PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

Volume of Coarse Aggregate (In reference Combined Aggregate Gradation, All In Aggregate) = 60,0 %

Volume of Fine Aggregate = 100-60 = 40,0 %

(Conforming to All In Aggregate Gradation, PD 6682-1/BS EN 12620)
Hence, Adopting the Volume of Coarse Aggt. = 60%
Volume of Fine Aggregate = 100-60 = 40,0 %

Note: - Aggregates should be used in saturated surface dry condition. If otherwise, when computing the requirement of mixing water, allowance shall be
made for the free (surface) moisture contributed by the fine and coarse aggregates. On the other hand, if the aggregates are dry, the amount of mixing water
should be increased by an amount equal to the moisture likely to be absorbed by the aggregates. necessary adjustments are also required to be made in mass
of aggregates. The surface water and percent water absorption of aggregates shall be determined to calculated requirement of mixing water.

A-11 The slump shall be measured and the water content and dosage of admixture shall be adjusted for achieving the required slump based on trial, if required.
The mix proportions shall be reworked for the actual water content and checked for durability requirements.

WATER REDUCING AND RETARDING SUPERPLASTICIZING ADMIXTURE FOR CONCRETE

DESCRIPTION CHARACTERISTICS / ADVANTAGES

SikaPlast®-3800 is a polycarboxylate based superplas- SikaPlast®-3800 acts by surface adsorption on the ce-
ticizer developed particularly for use in ready mixed ment particles producing steric hindrance as well as
concrete to give extended slump retention and high electrostatic repulsion between cement particles
strength development of normal grade concrete which results in higher dispersion, flow and retention.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Concreting guidance The standard rules of good concreting practice for production and placing
must be observed when using SikaPlast®-3800 in concrete.
Refer to relevant standards.
Fresh concrete must be cured properly especially at high temperatures in
order to prevent plastic and drying shrinkage. Use Sika® Antisol® products
as a curing agent or apply wet hessian.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Recommended dosage 0.5 – 2.0 % by weight of binder
Higher dosages by weight of binder can be used depending on the mix
design, raw materials, climatic conditions and concrete requirements. Trial
mixes must be performed to establish the exact dosage rate required.
Dispensing SikaPlast®-3800 is added to the gauging water or simultaneously poured
with it into the concrete mixer at the batching plant. Do not add Sika-
Plast®-3800 directly to the dry mix.
For optimum utilization of its high water reduction property we recom-
mend thorough mixing at a minimal wet mixing time of 60 seconds. The
addition of the remaining gauging water (to fine tune concrete consist-
ency) may only be started after two-thirds of the wet mixing time to avoid
surplus water in the concrete.
Compatibility SikaPlast®-3800 may be combined with all types of Portland cement and
the following Sika products:
▪ SikaPump®
▪ Sika® FerroGard®-901
▪ SikaFume®
▪ Sika-Aer®
▪ Sika® Control-40
▪ Sika®-WT 1
▪ SikaControl®-11 WT AE
We recommend performing trial mixes to establish the required perform-
ance when combined with the above products. Please consult our Sika
Technical Department.

Measurement Method :
The calibration is performed by direct measurement according to ASTM C94-09.
Measurement Uncertainty :
The reported expanded uncertainty of measurement is stated as the standard uncertainty of measurement multiplied by the coverage factor k=2,
which for a normal distribution corresponds to a coverage probability of approximately 95%. The standard uncertainty of measurement has been
determined in accordance with EA’s Publication EA-4/02. The long term stability of the calibration object is not included in the reported expanded
uncertainty of measurement.
