Assignment 2 CEL401 TOPIC: CROSS DRAINAGE STRUCTURE

1. Define cross drainage structures. Explain various types of cross drainage

structures.(figure 24.1 to 24.4)
2. Design an expanding transition for a channel for the following data:
Length of flume = 15 m.
Width of throat = 10 m
width of channel = 16m.
Use ( a) Chaturvedi’s method (b) Mitra’s method. (Example 24.1)
3. Design a transition by Hind’s method for the following data: (Example 24.2)
FSL of canal at exit = 202.30
Normal width of canal=20 m Normal depth of flow = 2.3 m
Flumed width of canal =8.3 mflumed depth of flow = 3.0m
Full supply discharge = 50 cumecs
Splay in contraction transition = 2:1
Splay in expansion transition = 3:1
Length of flumed trough = 60 m
Normal side slopes of canal = 0.5:1
Loss of head in trough = 0.280 m
4. Design an aqueduct for the following data. Design the transitions by Mitra’s method.
(Example 24.3)
a. Canal (i) Full supply discharge =35 cumecs (ii) full supply level 200.00
(iii) canal bed level =198.5 (iv) Depth of water =1.50 m
(v) Bed width= 22.00 m (vi) Side slope =1.5:1
b. Drainage (i) High flood discharge =350 cumecs. (ii) High flood level =196.5
(iii) Bed level = 193.5 (iv) General ground level =199.0
Constant depth in transition =1.50 m. Flumed width =12 m.
Assume the following parameters.
Manning’s rugosity coefficient =0.015. Splay in contracting transition =2:1.
Splay in expanding transition =3:1. Lacey’s silt factor = 1.0.
Free board in canal =0.50; The superstructure consists of an RCC trough.
5. Design a syphon aqueduct for the following data: (Example 24.4)
(a) Canal
(i) Full supply discharge =50 cumecs (ii) Full supply level =201.80
(iii) Water depth =1.80 m (iv) Bed level =200.00
(v) Side slopes = 1.5:1 (vi) Bed width = 36 m
(b) Drainage
(i) Maximum flood discharge =450 cumecs (ii)High of flood level =200.50
(iii) Bed level = 198.00 (iv) Natural ground level =200.00
Assume other data, if required.
6. Design a canal syphon for the following data: (Example 24.5)
a) Canal
(i) Full supply discharge =50 cumecs (ii) Full supply level =202.30
(iii) Bed level =200.00 (iv) Side slopes = 0.5:1 (v) Bed width = 20 m
b) Drainage
(i) Catchment area = 65 km2 (ii)Dicken’s coefficient = 5.0
(iii) bed level = 201.00 (iv) HFL =203.50
Assume other data, if required. For the canal transition, use data of Example
24.2.
