INTRODUCTION
This module’s overall theme is ​Digital Learners on Windows Desktop.​ In this
module, children will get to learn how to take good care of ourselves and our
computers as well. This module also aims to develop learner’s skills in using ICT
specifically the environment of Windows Desktop.

Unit Overview
Digital Learners on Windows Desktop​ has 3 units of study. These are:

UNIT 1: How to Take Care of Ourselves and Our Computers


Children will identify and apply proper ways of taking care of ourselves
while using our computers and gadgets.

UNIT 2: Windows Desktop and Its Environment ​Children will explore


the parts of the desktop and its icons. Children will also change the
desktop wallpaper.

UNIT 3: Getting to Know the Use of Taskbar, Start Button and


Cortana Search Bar ​Children will get to learn how to use taskbar, start
button and cortana search bar.

Each module contains different units of study which are divided into the

Parts of the Desktop

Look at the picture below. The desktop of the computer consists of


the following parts:

Let us take a closer look at each part.

1. Wallpaper​ ​- This is the background area of the desktop.

2. Icons​ ​- These are the small images on the desktop that serve as
the shortcuts for programs, folders, or files.

3. Taskbar​ ​- This is the horizontal rectangular bar. It is located at


the bottom part of the desktop. Through the taskbar, we can
also switch easily between the programs or files that are
simultaneously opened or running.

4. Start Button​ - This is found at the bottom left corner of the


desktop. It is located on the taskbar.

5. Cortana Search Bar​ ​- This is used to find programs, folders, or files
on our computer easily by just typing a keyword. More than this,
Cortana is our ​digital agent.

6. Quick Launch Bar​ - This is beside the Cortana search bar on the
taskbar. It provides a quick and easy way to start a program
with just a click.

7. System Tray​ - This is also known as the ​notification area.​ It is


located on the bottom right corner of the desktop found on the
taskbar.

Clicking Taskbar and Start Button

Time: ​15​ minutes

In this activity you will…. You will need these materials:


1. Learn how to use the taskbar • module
and the start button. • computer / laptop

The ​taskbar ​is the horizontal rectangular bar that is located at the
bottom part of the desktop. We cam pin to the taskbar our favorite
or most commonly used programs for easier access.

We can move the taskbar to the right, top, or left side of the screen.
To do this, we:

1. Position the cursor to an empty area of the taskbar.


2. Once the mouse cursor is over an empty area on the taskbar,
click and hold the left mouse button down.
3. While holding the mouse button down, move the cursor to the
middle edge of where we want the taskbar to be.
4. When the taskbar has moved to its new location, release the
left mouse button.

If we will try moving the taskbar to the right side of the screen, it will
look like the one on the next page.

Start Button

The ​Start button ​is found at the bottom left corner of the
desktop that is located on the taskbar.

The ​Start menu ​is the primary location in Windows to locate our
installed programs and find any files or folders. From the Start
menu, we can access all our programs through the ​All apps
option and on the left pane.

Cortana Search Bar

The ​Cortana search bar ​is used to easily find programs, folders, or files
easily by just typing a keyword.

To use the Cortana search bar, we do the following:

1. On the desktop, locate the taskbar that is usually found at the


bottom of the screen.

2. In the search bar, located next to the Start button, type in the
name of program or file to access.

3. In the search results, select the file or program that matches to
open. Below is a sample search of the Microsoft Word program
using the search bar.

The search bar also allows us to do searches on the Internet, in


addition to searching in Windows.

Cortana

● The name Cortana is inspired by the fictional, artificially


intelligent (AI) character in the ​Halo ​video game series.
● More than searching for a program, folder, or file, Cortana is our
digital agent. ​She will help us get things done.
● To begin, type a question in the search bar or select the
microphone and talk to Cortana. Typing works for all types of
computers with Windows 10, but we need a microphone to talk.
