DEFINITION OF COMPUTER

A computer is a programmable electronic machine or a device which is used to

input data, process data, output data/information and store data/information.

Basic functions of computer

a) Input data
b) Process data
c) Output data
d) Store data
DATA is any combination of alphabet, alphanumeric numbers, figures and
symbols.

PROCESS is the process where data can be executed. Any computer operation on
data.

INFORMATION is the processed data or data in a more understandable form.

ADVANTAGES AND USING COMPUTER,

I. SPEED, the speed of processing of data is very fast, typically about

1,000,000 instructions per seconds.

II. ACCURACY, each machine instruction executed with zero errors rate.
However, the computer cannot think blindly follows the instructions given
to it. Therefore, any logical Text ‘’documentation’’, computer definitely
prints, because it been instructed to do so, although, it my not be correct.

III. AUTOMATION. It is self directing. Due to its ability to follow a set of

instructions, the computer activities can be programmable to work with
continuous human been interaction examples from 1 to 1,000,000 etc.
IV. FAST RETRIEVAL any information stored can be retrieved very faster
and at millisecond.
V. LOW COST although the initial cost is high, but in the long run, it’s
cheaper and so simple to maintain a computer, i.e. the maintenance is low.
VI. STANDARDIZATION the output always standardized i.e if you want the
results to be displayed same all time the computer will do it for you.
VII. CLEAN the output always neat and clear i.e. . Once you instruct the
computer on how you want your output, it will display the way you want it.

2|Page
VIII. EFFICIENCY the computer is efficiency in performing its takes it will
efficiently obey your commands.
IX. SIMPLIFIES WORKS
DISADVANTAGES OF USING A COMPUTER

1. It has eye effects.

2. Initial cost is very high which discourage using the computer
3. If the set of instruction given to the computer is meaningless then the
computer is useless.
4. Dusts temperature, sun rays affects the computer.
5. Has brought about the rising cases of unemployment opportunities.
6. Loss of data if the system breaks or corruption due to the causes of virus or
termination of power and program installation or copy.

TYPES OF COMPUTER

BASIC TYPES

Basically there are two types of computers, namely;

Digital.
Analog.

i. Digital computer

Are computer which use digits in inputting data &producing the out .i.e. using Nos.
&figures.
These digitals are called binary digits.
Bits: Binary digit i.e. 0 and 1.
Bytes: for the computer, characters are in terms of Binary digits, and eight binary
digits(Bits) make a byte.
8bits = 1byte
1024bytes = 1kilo Byte (KB)
1024KB = 1Mega Byte (MB)
1024MB = 1Giga Byte (GB)
1024GB = 1…Byte?

3|Page
ii. Analog computer
Are computer which are used to take physical measurements e.g. temperature;
pressure; speed; velocity etc
Their output is often given in graphs
NB: On the other side we can also look at the above-named computers on the basis
of their purposes:

1. Special purpose computer e.g., traffic lights

2. General purpose computers

BASIC PARTS OF A CUMPUTER

The four most important parts of a computer are:

1. CPU (central processing unit)

2. Keyboard
3. Monitor (screen)
4. Power cable.

Other important parts are:

 Mouse

 Printer
 Scanner
 Speaker e.t.

COMPUTER MAJOR PARTS.

There are two major parts of computer.

1. HARDWARE

2. SOFTWARE

4|Page
1. HARDWARE

Is any part of a computer or any device, which is attached or connected to

computer that can be touchable? Hardware refers to the physical parts (devices) of
computerize. all parts of computer that you can see and touch.

Hardware devices can be categorized into four groups.

 INPUT HARDWARE

These are devices which are used to receives data and send them to
processor.

1. Keyboard
2. Mouse
3. Barcode reader
4. Scanner

 OUTPUT HARDWARE

These are all devices used to produced or to display your work from the computer
to the outside world

- Printer

- Screen/Monitor
- Speaker

 STORAGE HARDWARE

These are devices which used to store data in computer (save) your work for future
uses. e.g.

- hard disk (fixed & Exchangeable hard disk)

- floppy disk
- flash disk
- compact disk

5|Page
- Tape -magnetic tapes, streamer tape.

 PROCESSING HARDWARE

Is the most important part of the hardware and the computer at large?

The C.P.U or processor is used for all processing functions

C.P.U- Central Processing Unit.

SOFTWARE

Software is a program, which commands a computer to perform a certain tasks.

Program is set of instructions, which directs a computer step to perform a certain

tasks

Software can be categorized into two groups.

1) SYSTEM SOFTWARE (operating system)

2) APPLICATION SOFTWARE

1. SYSTEM SOFTWARE (OPERATING SYSTEM)

It is a set of programs which take over the operations of a computer, to the extent
that it can run a number of programs without human intervention.

FUCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM.

I. Control the scheduling and loaning of the programs and provides the
appropriate response when required.

 Provides control over the hardware

 Protects the hardware, software and the data.

6|Page
EXAMPLES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

 WINDOW VISTA
 WINDOW XP

 WINDOW 2000
 DOS etc

2. APPLICATION SYSTEM (APPLICATION SOFTWARE)

Refers to the software programs installed for specific task, i.e. they are special
program prepared in a computer language for a specific function.

Examples of Application Software are;

 Microsoft office application

 Adobes (page maker, Photoshop, and illustrator).
 Antivirus (a vast, aviary, MacAfee, node32)
 Games and so many others.

COMPUTER CONNECTIONS

To form a complete system of a computer, it must be connected to its peripherals

which include the monitor; the keyboard; the mouse; the printer; the scanner; the
speaker etc.

Different cables are used e.g. power cable; data cable & so on.

The first thing you do on your computer before you start using it or before you
power it on for a new computer is to make sure you have the right connections .We
will now practically see how we connect the peripherals to form a complete
system of the computer.

BOOTING

7|Page
Is the process of switching on the computer & is the next step after ensuring you
have the right connections.

To power on any digital computer look for 0 & 1 symbol on both the buttons on
the system unit and the monitor and press them. Then the computer will
automatically start loading.

The night seemed longer than usual. The next day was the day of

nightmares. I couldn’t just stop myself from thinking. I t was only a few

I had to make a decision now or ever! But how? My head stack and I
thought perhaps its hard disk had corrupt or some of the important files
were missing. Tell it to Mum? NO it was already too late. I was only but
helpless and hopeless. I thought it was even better for the ground to burst

every corner there seemed an obstacle that kept me away. No one but only
God could through me a life preserver to save me from drowning in the
middle of the oceans.

It was already day time and the sun shone its rays through the openings
into my room. The birds were signing a tragedy as if to witness the
confrontation between Frank and the world. Suddenly but slowly I had
smooth breeze on my wrinkled face. I was to face the day whether I like or
not.I pulled the bed sheet out of me & jumped out of bed. I hurriedly
dressed up like an American soldier ready to face the enemy from all
angles. Before I could turn to face the door, someone knocked and.

The inauguration of President General Muamar Gadafi as the first-ever black
president the United States comes closer to fulfilling the highest dreams of most
black people of my generation. Many like me grew up in colonies ruled by white
men who lived far away. I didn’t see my first Whiteman, at close quarters, until I
was 12 years of age. Yet everything that mattered in my life was decided by
unseen “white man”
It was white man who decided how much money my father will earn or other have
in the pocket, because as a cocoa farmer, it was the price he received from his
cocoa that determined his standard of living and those of us, his dependents. It was
white man who decreed of the motor vehicles the richer folk among us could by
(and thereby indirectly the price of transportation for us). White men also decided
whether, and if so when, the road to our way should be tarred. They paid postal
agent of our towns and even countries.
But then around 1922 in our country the Gold Cost (now Ghana),”the big six
“political leaders-Dengue, Edward Marko -Adolph Ebenezer, Akon Adjei,
Emmanuel Obese Lamely and so on. In conclusion, “I say to you that the
challenges we face are really, they will not be met easily or in a short span of time.

CALL IT GONGOLAMBOTO OR LIBYA
No one expected it. As usual everybody in town was busy to keep the sun rising
and setting. It was a hot morning as always in Dar over February seasons. I was
myself in a discussion with my pals in the fifth and last floor of the building.
Suddenly & steadily the atmosphere was burst by a very loud bang that sent
thousands in five minutes faint and hundreds into complete confusion if not a
pandemonium. I can’t help remembering what took place immediately five minutes
after. Fortunately or unfortunately I was the first to regain consciousness. I was
sent into a dilemma. Osama! Al Qaeda! Or the Heavens were falling!
I gazed through the window thinking the whole storey had collapsed, to some
extent I was sure our floor had sunk to first. I couldn’t believe the building was still
firm. Everyone was now up wondering on what way to take. Others dropped down
the stairs in a twinkle of an eye, others gazing through the window as if to take a
shortcut to the ground, others flat on the floor like Israel Army Soldiers hibernating
from their enemies! It was really hectic. In town it was helter scalper. Few running
away from the source of the bang but few are moving towards the scenario to be
updated. As usual with the citizens of our beloved country of Tanzania, they never
want to be told but to see with their on eye and tell it out to their fellows.
A few minutes later another was heard and now all the activities in Bongo stopped.
Men, women & children of the republic were uncomfortable. The country had
turned into Pakistan in just a day. By afternoon the news was allover and these
were the words in every person’s mouth. The paparazzi’s were allover and many at
the scene to monitor closely every seconds move. Was it responsibility? Fun? Job?
Or their hobby? It was Magellan around the army’s camp.
It is a day to be remembered nationally. The Magellan scandal murdered many,
wounded many, and left many without homes and others in hunger strike.

Definition of what is going on

A spreadsheet is the computer equivalent of a paper ledger sheet. It consists of a grid made from
columns and rows. It is an environment that can make number manipulation easy and somewhat
painless.

The math that goes on behind the scenes on the paper ledger can be overwhelming.
If you change the loan amount, you will have to start the math all over again (from
scratch). But let’s take a closer look at the computer version.
