We have seen how personal and external factors influence us in choosing a
certain career path. Next, we will try to see how to place all these factors
in a bigger context. How does your personal development affect your
future career development? This lesson will discuss in detail how these
two important aspects of your life are interrelated.
BRONFENBRENNER ECOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENT
"Urie Bronfenbrenner", an American developmental
psychologist, proposed a model of human development in his
Human Ecological Theory. This is also now called Bio
ecological system theory to account for the biological state of
the child which is considered part of the influencing
environment. This theory states that a child grows and
develops as he or she interacts with the different layers of
the environment.
Whatever happens on one level can affect the rest the systems.
In other words, this theory recognizes that there is a ripple
effect in the various areas of the person's development.
Positive changes affect not only the person but also his or her
family as well as the community. This becomes true when
conflicts or clashes happen. The tension caused by a conflict
or problem has an effect on the other areas of one's life.

DIAGRAM OF
BRONFENBENNERS
ECOLOGICAL THEORY
MICROSYSTEM
The microsystem is the inner layer where a person makes direct
interactions with social agents like the family, church, school, or
even hospital. This theory tells that the person is not a mere
recipient of his or her experiences but that he or she develops as
he or she socializes or interacts with other people in the
microsystem environment. At the same time, the person also helps
in constructing this environment.
MESOSYSTEM
This layer involves the relationships between the microsystems in
one's life. It means that family experience may be related to school
experience and vice versa. For example, if a child is neglected by
his parents, he may have a low chance of developing a positive
attitude toward his teachers, Also, this child may feel awkward in
the presence of peers and may resort to withdrawal from a group
of classmates. If the child has been bullied in school, he or she may
become either depressed or become aggressive at home.
EXOSYSTEM
This setting is a link between the context where the
person does not have an active role, and the context where
he or she may be actively participating. The economic
status of the family, the current political system, and even
the educational system can somehow influence the child.
Suppose a child has stronger attachment to the father than
to the mother.
EXOSYSTEM
-Because of the family economic situation, the father had
to work abroad as an OFW for years, limiting the time of
the father to be with his child. It is possible that conflict
may arise between the mother and the child, or this family
set-up may lead to a stronger bond between the mother and
her child.
MACROSYSTEM
This is the outermost layer of the child's environment. It
consists of his or her cultural values, customs, and
traditions and the laws of his or her country. Theorists
believe that the culture where parents came from
influence the way they raise their children.
There is also a theory that says people are affected by forces they
cannot control. This is called the sociocultural determinant
approach because uncon- trolled social and cultural conditions like
family background, income level of parents, parents' occupations
and educational level, the place or environment where one grew up
have influence on the person's general outlook in life. Thus, it is
vital to recognize that one's personal development is important in
determining what we want to do in the future or what we call our
career path. Our career defines who we are and what we can
contribute to society
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT TO
CAREER AND LIFE GOALS
1.How important is personal development to our career development?
What makes us decide to be a teacher and not a nurse? What prompts us
to engage in business rather than work as an employee? How well do we
know ourselves? And how well do we know what we want in life? Personal
development precedes career development. One has to develop oneself as a
person before one can decide on what he or she wants to do. It involves
our personality, our attitude, values, interests, and resources. We have
seen how Bronfenbrenner explains various influences in our environment
where we interact with and ultimately construct our environment.
But ultimately, it is what we are, what we have become as a
person that determines what we want to do and establish in
life in order to establish our niche under the sun. We need to
consider not only our talents, abilities, and interests but also
our limitations and resources. For instance, if you want to
become a doctor, ask yourself if you can face blood and stand
the smell of a hospital. Also, do you have the financial
resources to complete the medical training?
2.Choosing a career is not a one-time decision. It is an
unraveling process. It evolves and grows as you do. The things
you do now in school, at home, and during your leisure time will
affect your future decision and influence your career. Thus, the
way you see your time now is important in determining your
future occupation. Some people select an occupation early in life
and never change it.
A case in point is Joy's dream to become a lawyer. Since she was in
the third grade, Joy has always looked up to her father who was a
successful lawyer. She dreams of becoming a lawyer someday. She
went to law school and passed the bar exams. Looking back, she was
happy that her dream to become a lawyer was fulfilled. Not all
cases end up having Joy's success story. There are some who make
widely different occupational choices before establishing
themselves in a clear pattern.
VISUALIZING YOUR FUTURE
CAREER
Making choices in life is part of our daily experience. How
you spend your time and energy shapes the kind of person you
can become tomorrow. There are turning points in your life
when choosing you future career requires self assessment,
that is deliberating what resources you have and what you
lack.
VISUALIZATION
Considering all the factors that we have
discussed in the previous slides, you are in a
better position now to take a bolder step
toward your chosen field. One of the methods
that you can use is visualization or imagery.
"Visualization" is simply a technique for creating a
mental image of a future event. When we visualize
our dream, we believe in the possibility of
achieving it. Visualization also help us get
motivated and prepare us to work toward our goal
CAREER PLANNING
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DECIDED
ON THE CAREER YOU WANT TO
PURSUE, YOU MAY WANT TO TAKE
SEVERAL STEPS SUCH AS:

8
1.Getting an interest test, aptitude test, and
personality test from your guidance counselor to
determine your special interest, potential abilities
for this work, and if your personality matches this
kind of job.
2.Determining your
short-term and long-term
goals.
3.Getting some training on the job or pursue
further studies. You may want to widen your
knowledge about this field by learning more about
it through observation, participation, and reading
current literature.
For instance, if you wish to become a broadcast
journalist, you may probably visit a radio or TV
network and observe how they do the job in the
actual setting. You may volunteer to get some
training, interview certain people involved in the
work, research on broadcast journalism online, and
read more about their jobs.
