The objectives of this course are
 To impart basic knowledge of the DC and AC circuits and their

 To familiarize the students with the basic knowledge of measuring
instruments, electric wiring and installations.
Course Pre-requisite Physics of 12th Standard

Course Outcomes: After studying this course, the students will be able to

Note: Examiner will set ten questions in total. Question one will have 10 MCQ of 1 mark (each) from all units,
Question two will have 6 parts of 2 marks (each) from all units. Remaining eight questions of 10 marks each to
be set by taking two questions from each unit. The students have to attempt six questions in total, first and second
being compulsory and selecting one from each Unit.

UNIT-I

DC Circuits: Kirchhoff’s Law, Types of Sources, Current and voltage divide rule, Source Transformation, Mesh
Analysis, Nodal Analysis, Star-Delta transformation.

Network Theorems: Superposition Theorem, Thevenin’s Theorem, Norton’s Theorem, and Maximum power
transfer theorem.

UNIT-II

AC Circuits: Generation of AC Voltage, Basic terminology, Average Value, RMS Value, Pure R, L & C Circuit,
Impedance triangle, true power, apparent power, power factor, Series R-L, R-C & R-L-C circuits, series
resonance, Concept of Phasor. Parallel R-L, R-C & R-L-C circuits, Parallel resonance.

Three Phase AC circuits: Relationship between Line voltage or current and phase voltage or current for star &
delta circuit, measurement of power and power factor in three phase circuit using two watt-meter method.
UNIT-III

Measuring Instruments: Types of Instruments, Controlling torque, Deflecting Torque and Damping Torque,
Error analysis, Construction and working Principle of Moving coil and Moving iron type instruments,
Construction and working Principle of Induction type Voltmeter, Ammeter and Wattmeter, Energy Meter.

UNIT-IV

Electrical Wiring, Switches & Earthing: Types of Wires and wiring systems, Advantages and Disadvantages
of different wiring system, Fuses: types of fuse, its need and importance, MCB, MCCB, ELCB, Power rating of
household appliances, Concept of earthing and its types.
