SWOT MATRIX
SWOT MATRIX
A SWOT matrix is a tool that allows businesses or individuals
to identify their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats.
SWOT matrix, also known as a SWOT analysis, as a strategic
planning tool to determine and evaluate the advantages,
disadvantages, opportunities, and threats related to a
project, company, activity, or strategy.
Elements of SWOT Matrix (Internal)
Strengths are the qualities that give a business,
01 - STRENGTHS organization or individual a comparative advantage over
others. They're the factors that enable a company to
achieve its objectives. Strengths can be tangible resources,
such as a strong balance sheet, buildings, machinery,
employees and a market. Intangible strengths may include
strong customer loyalty, a talented staff, patents and an
excellent reputation.

Weaknesses are factors that reduce an organization's

02 - WEAKNESSES ability to accomplish its goals. They can include a lack
of funds, low production capacity, unmotivated
employees and a small market share. A SWOT analysis
can help a business identify its weaknesses and turn
them into strengths.
Elements of SWOT Matrix (External)

Opportunities are unexplored factors that can

03 - OPPORTUNITIES provide rewards for a business, project or individual.
Opportunities can take the form of experience, new
technology, new markets or even a poorly performing
competitor. Identifying opportunities can help a
business use its strengths to its advantage.

Threats are events or factors beyond a company's

04 - THREATS or person's control that can affect them
negatively. Also known as risks, threats are
external factors that a SWOT analysis can help
businesses identify and take proactive measures.
This can help reduce or eliminate the threat's
effects.

Strategic Position & ACtion Evaluation matrix

SPACE matrix is a strategic management tool that focuses

on strategy formulation especially as related to the
competitive position of an organization.
Similar to the SWOT model, SPACE analysis deals with the
internal and external environment of an organisation, yet it does
not identify its strengths, weaknesses, existing opportunities or
threats.

Each of the four groups of these SPACE factors also consists of

sub-factors which have a numerical expression – the scores
attributed to FS and IS range between 0 (the worst) and +6 (the
best); the scores which may be attributed to CA and ES range
between 0 (the best) and -6 (the worst).

AGGRESSIVE
an attractive and relatively stable industry, the
company has a competitive advantage and it
can protect it, a critical factor is the possible
entry of new competitors into the industry, it
may be considered new acquisitions, increasing
market share and focusing on competitive
products.

typical in an attractive industry (high industry

strength) with stable economic conditions.
CONSERVATIVE
The companies positioned in this quadrant are
in a situation of steady, yet slowly-growing
markets.
This is when the business is in a good position in
its financial strength and environmental stability
but its market offers limited opportunities
because it is either unattractive or the business
has a competitive disadvantage or both.
COMPETITIVE
have the characteristic of an attractive industry (high
industry strength) in a relatively unstable environment

This position is typical of enterprises with substantial

competitive advantages in highly attractive branches,
yet their financial strength is insufficient to compensate
for the instability of the environment. A major strategic
imperative is acquiring financial power so as to ensure
the funds for further expansion.

The companies positioned in this quadrant need to

improve their profitability (output, territories, market
segments), differentiation (in terms of the products they
offer), and raise their overall marketing efficiency.
DEFENSIVE
is an unattractive industry where competitiveness is
the critical factor.

This position is typical of unattractive branches where

organizations have insufficient funds and competitive
products. The competitiveness of the enterprise is
usually a key factor. The behavior of the company is one
of a defender trying to protect its interests.
