ACTIVITY- 1
PAPER SCALE

AIM:
To make a paper scale of least count 0.2cm and 0.5cm.

APPARATUS:
A thick sheet of paper, sharp pencil, pen, ruler, a pair of scissors, a metre scale, a
paper cutter.

PRINCIPLE:
The smallest reading that can be noted accurately by an instrument is known as least
count. The precision of measurement depends upon the least count of the instrument
used for taking measurement. The smaller is the least count of an instrument, the more
will be the accuracy of measurement and vice-versa.

PROCEDURE:
• Take a sheet of white paper and draw a rectangle ABCD of length slightly greater than
15 cm and breadth 2 cm using a fine tipped black ink pen.
• Draw two dotted lines EF and GH parallel to the length of the rectangle at a distance of
3 mm and 5 mm from the boundary AB of the rectangle with the help of a sharply
pointed pencil. Place a meter scale along the length AB and mark dots on the line AB at
0 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm ……15 cm. The zero mark and 15cm mark should be slightly within
the boundary line AB.
• Mark vertical lines (of length 5 mm) perpendicular to the line AB and up to dotted line
GH at the position of each mark. Write 0, 1, 2, …… 15 at each cm mark.
• Erase the dotted lines EF and GH. The paper scale of the least count 0.2 cm is ready.
• Using a sharp paper cutter cut this scale carefully along the boundary ABCD of the
rectangle and paste it on the record book.
• Similarly repeat the procedure to make a paper scale of least count 0.5 mm.

CONCLUSION:
Paper scales of least count 0.2 cm and 0.5 cm are made.

PRECAUTIONS:

• Sharply pointed pencil should be used for marking dots and lines.
• All the markings should be made on the paper scale carefully after removing error due
to parallax
