Q.1 How many phonemes are there in English? How do we decide whether a sound is
a phoneme or a consonant? How are the letters ‘a’ ‘e’ ‘I’ ‘o’ and ‘u’ used to
produce multiple vowel sounds? What are allophones? Explain with examples.

Q. 2 (a) Explain the difference between voiced and voiceless sounds by providing
examples. Demonstrate it by drawing a diagram. (10)
(b) Explain which of the following are voiced and which ones are voiceless
sounds, and why? (10)

Q. 3 Describe consonant sounds of English language in terms of their place of
articulation. How does place of articulation play a role in grouping certain sounds

What is a consonant cluster? Provide examples of some consonant clusters how
they behave differently in a word than the combinations of vowels and
consonants. (20)

Q. 5 Vowels are classified into long vowels and short vowels. Explain vowel sounds
by drawing a trapezium. (20)

Q. 1 Stressed syllables are identified by the prominence or absence of it, in the given
words. Explain how stress plays its role in making certain parts of the words
prominent, and how the change in stress leads to change of meaning and

least ten (10) words with different stress pattern according to their parts of

syllable and supply 10 sentences in which tonic syllable is present. (20)

Q. 4 Select an audio from your favorite academic YouTube channel. The audio should
consist of 10-minute discussion/ speech of the speaker/s. Write its script in
English. then transcribe it in phonetic script. (20)

Q.5 Stress is given to the most important words. Most of the times they are content
words. Choose a ten-line text of your choice. Identify stressed words in the sentences
by marking stress on them, and explain what (and how) sentence stress plays its role
in communicating meaning to the listener in oral communication. (20)
