Lecture 4 (Attitude and professional image )


What is attitude
• Attitude refers to a set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a
particular object, person, thing, or event. Attitudes are often the
result of experience or upbringing ‫التنشئة‬, and they can have a
powerful influence over behavior. While attitudes are enduring ‫ راسخه‬,
they can also change
Why attitudes is important

• Your attitude, as the care giver, can make a difference in how your
patients feel. It'll help them feel they are being cared for with
compassion. A positive attitude can be infectious! A positive attitude
in health care professions can also impact your actual job
performance.
• Nurses learn the required attitudes of nursing through training as
part of their socialization into the profession.
• This promotes patient satisfaction and loyalty, thereby augmenting
the revenue‫ إيرادات‬and reputation of the hospital
What attitudes nurses should have
• caring,
• compassionate,
• effective communication,
• responsibility, and accountability,
• sense of duty or obligation,
• collaboration with patients, families and other members of the
healthcare team
PROFESSIONAL IMAGE

• A health-care provider’s personal appearance must project


professionalism, this is achieved through practical consideration in
developing a uniform policy
• Health care providers appearance should be consistent with patients’
expectations for the facility
• Employees should wear uniforms and not their own clothes to work.
• Uniforms create the appearance of a cohesive team
• Wearing street clothes creates a safety hazard because pathogens
harbored in clothing fibers

• Uniforms must be adapted for individuals with disabilities
• A name tag should be part of the uniform and should include the
employee’s name and job title
• Beards ‫ اللحى‬must be permitted for religious or medical purposes
Clarifying the Dress Code for Health-Care
Providers and Staff Members ‫قواعد اللباس‬
Hair:
• Hair should be neat and clean.
• No extreme hair colors (e.g., blue, purple, pink, orange).
Jewelry
• Earrings: No more than 2 earrings per ear worn in the earlobes. Stretching of the
earlobes is prohibited ‫ممنوع‬
• No large costume jewelry. .‫ال توجد مجوهرات كبيرة الحجم‬
• No visible body piercings ‫( الحلق الذي يوضع على الجسم‬must be covered or removed).
• No tongue piercings.‫الحلق الذي يوضع على اللسان‬
• Rings ‫ الخواتم‬should be tasteful ‫مقبوله‬, and they should be worn in moderate numbers.
• Bracelets‫ االساور‬: In patient-contact areas, 1 per arm, no porous bracelets, no large
bracelets, and no charm bracelets. Bracelets should not be a threat to clean or sterile
areas

Shoes
• Shoes must be all one color or mostly one color. If the first thing
someone notices about you is your shoes, then they are too bright.
• Shoes must be clean and in good repair.
• Laces ‫ اربطه‬must match shoes.
• No flip-flops‫ زحافات‬, sandals ‫ صنادل‬, or slippers‫ بوابيج‬.
• Closed-toe shoes ‫ احذية مغطاه‬are required in clinical areas.
• Socks ‫ الجرابات‬must be worn with sneakers ‫االحذيه الرياضيه‬

• All tattoos must be covered by sleeves, bandages, or other means
Perfumes ‫العطور‬
• Because strong fragrances ‫ عطور او روائح‬can cause respiratory
distress in patients and other staff members, perfume, aftershave,
and deodorant should not be noticeable ‫ غير ظاهره‬.
• Good personal hygiene is expected of all employees—no body odor.
• Cigarette-smoke odor is not acceptable.

• Clothing must fit properly, be neat, and be clean. ‫يجب أن تكون المالبس مناسبة ومرتبة‬

• Jeans ‫ الجينز‬are not allowed to be worn unless approved by the manager (special
days).
• Appropriate holiday attire ‫ مالبس العطل‬is acceptable in patient-contact areas.
• No gloves of any kind other than medical gloves (i.e., no knit gloves with or
without fingers, no solid or print trendy gloves).

• For infection control and patient safety, fingernails should be an
appropriate length (not longer than 0.25 inch(
• No artificial fingernails‫ االظافر االصطناعيه‬in clinical areas.
• No nail jewelry

Name Tags ‫بطاقة االسماء‬
• Name tags must always be worn on the outermost garment ‫طرف المالبس‬
‫ العلوي‬on the upper chest area in order to be easily read.
Logos ‫الشعارات‬
• Clothing and jewelry with advertisements, sayings‫ مقوالت‬, causes,
campaigns, or logos of other organizations are not permitted. ‫ال يسمح بارتداء‬
‫المالبس والمجوهرات التي تحمل إعالنات‬
• Politically oriented‫ ذات الطابع السياسي‬material is prohibited.
Lockers ‫الخزائن‬
• Lockers are to be used to store and secure all personal items.
• Cell phones will be turned off and/or kept in your locker.
