2. A jet can travel at 350m/s. calculate how far it will travel at this speed in
a) 30seconds. 2mks

b) 5minutes 2mks

c) Half an hour. 2mks

3. Look at the following distance – time graphs of moving objects.

6.a) Name the basic units of:

i. length, ______________________
ii. mass, ______________________
iii. Time. _______________________ 2.mks

b. What is the difference between two measurements of the same object with values of 3.4 and 3.42?

7. a) The sides of a block of wood measure 4.0 cm, 3.0 cm and 5.0 cm. The block of wood has a mass of 30.0 grams.
I.Calculate the volume of the wood in m3. 2mks

II.Calculate the density of the wood in kg/m3. 2mks

b) An archaeologist is investigating a shipwreck and discovers a wooden box on the seabed.

The dimensions of the lid of the box are 1.2m by 0.80m and the pressure of the atmosphere is 1.0 ×
105 Pa. The lid is 15m below the surface of the sea.
The density of sea-water is 1020kg/m3.
Calculate
(i) the pressure on the lid of the box due to the sea-water,
Pressure =................................................................. [2]
(ii) the total pressure on the lid,
Pressure =................................................................. [1]
(iii) The downward force that the total pressure produces on the lid.
Force =................................................................. [2]
c. The force needed to open the lid is not equal to the value calculated in (a)(iii).
Suggest two reasons for this.

8. Two pans containing water are placed on the hotplates of an electric cooker, as shown in the figure
Small pan Large pan

Hotplates

The hotplates are switched on and the temperature of the water in the pans starts to increase.
When the temperature of the water is below 100°C, some water is evaporating. At 100°C, the water starts
to boil and its temperature remains constant.
(a) State and explain which pan has the greater rate of evaporation of water when both pans of water
are at the same temperature.
