Time and Work(Work Equivalence)
Topic/Course
Sub-Topic (Example: name of college)

2
Question 1
30 workers can make 24 tables in 21 days, working 8 hours a day. If 35
workers want to make 18 such tables in 12 days, how many hours should
they work every day?

A) 9
B) 10
C) 7
D) 15

Option A

Sol:
(M1*D1*H1)/ W1 =
(M2*D2*H2)/W2
(30*21*8)/24 = (35*12*H2)/18
After simplifying H2 = 9 hours.

3
Question 2
12 boys and 16 girls can do a piece of work in 10 days while 13 boys and
24 girls can do the same work in 8 days. Find the time taken by 15 boys
and 20 girls to do the same work.

A) 8
B) 10
C) 15
D) 4

Option A.
(12B + 16G)*10 = (13B + 24G)*8
120B +160G = 104B + 192G
16B = 32G
B/G = 2/1
Total work = (12*2 + 16*1)10 = 400 units.
So, (15B+20G)*D = 400
(15*2 + 20*1)*D = 400
So, D = 8 days.

Question 3
To complete a task, two men work on the first day, three men on the
second day and so on, till it gets completed. If the same work can be
completed by 9 men working for 15 days, in how many days will the work
be completed in the earlier case?

A) 15
B) 16
C) 14
D) 17

Option A.
Sol:
1st day = 2 men
2nd day = 3 men
3rd day = 4 men ...... (n-1)th day = n men.
The same work can be completed by 9 men in 15 days.
Total work = 9*15 = 135 units.
2 + 3 + 4 + ..... n = 135.
Add 1 on both sides.
1 + 2 + 3 .... + n = 136.
(n*(n+1))/2 = 136
n(n+1) = 272.
So n=16 men. But they are asking no. of days = n – 1 = 15 days.

5
Question 4
A work is completed such that on the nth day from the start, n men join the
work force. If one man started the work on the first day and the work is
completed in a total of 11 days, then find the number days in which 11
men working together finish the work?

A) 23
B) 11
C) 26
D) 6

Option C.
Sol:
1st day = 1men
2nd day = 1 + 2 men
3rd day = 1 + 2 + 3 men ................. 11th day = 1 + 2 + ..... + 11 men. {1+3+6+…..=
[n(n+1)(n+2)]/6}
Total = 286 men = 286 units of work.
To complete 286 units, time require to 11 men = 286/11 = 26 days.

6
Question 5
10 men can dig a 25 feet deep well in 8 days. After 2 days, a fifth of the
portion dug is filled due to rain. How many more days will the same men
take to dig it completely?

A) 1/5 days
B) ¼ Days
C) 2/5 days
D) 3/5 days

Option C.
Sol:
10 men in 2 days can dig 6.25 feet well, but 1/5th portion means 1.25 feet again
they have to dig.
Time required to dig that again = (1.25/25)*8 = 0.4 days = 2/5 days.

7
Question 6
4 men and 6 women complete a task in 24 days. If the women are at least
half as efficient as the men, but not more efficient than the men, what is the
range of the number of days for 6 women and 2 men to complete the same
task?

A) 30 to 33.6 days
B) 32 to 35 days
C) 33.6 to 35 days
D) 30 to 35 days

Option A.
4m and 6w finish in 24 days.
In one day, 4m + 6w = 1/24 of task.
In these questions, just substitute extreme values to get the whole
range
If a woman is half as efficient as man
4m + 3m = 1/24, 7m = 1/24, m = 1/168
6w + 2m = 3m + 2m = 5m, 5m will take 168/5 days = 33.6 days
If a woman is as efficient as a man
4m + 6w finish in 24 days
10m finish 1/24 of task in a day
6w + 2m = 8m, 8m will take 240/8 = 30 days to finish the task.
So, the range = 30 to 33.6 days. The new team will take 30 to 33.6 days
to finish the task. Choice (A)
Correct Answer: 30 to 33.6 days

Question 7
20 men or 24 women can complete a piece of work in 20 days. If 30 men
and 12 women under-take to complete the work how much time will they
take?

A) 10 days
B) 12 days
C) 15 days
D) 16 days

Option A.
20 men ≡ 24 women

⇒ 5 men ≡ 6 women

∴ 30 men + 12 women = 30 men+10 men=40 Men

∴ M1D1 = M2D2

⇒ 20 Men× 20 Days = 40 Men × D2days

⇒ D2 = (20 x 20)/40 = 10 days

9
Question 8
A is thrice as good as B in work. A is able to finish a job in 60 days less
than B. They can finish the work in - days if they work together.

A) 22 ½
B) 18
C) 26
D) 24

Option a)
If A completes a work in 1 day, B completes the same work in 3 days
Hence, if the difference is 2 days, B can complete the work in 3 days
=> if the difference is 60 days, B can complete the work in 90 days
=> Amount of work B can do in 1 day= 1/90
Amount of work A can do in 1 day = 3 × (1/90) = 1/30
Amount of work A and B can together do in 1 day = 1/90 + 1/30 = 4/90 = 2/45
=> A and B together can do the work in 45/2 days = 22 ½ days

Question 11
A and B together can complete a work in 12 days. A alone can complete it
in 20 days. If B does the work only for half a day daily, then in how many
days A and B together will complete the work?

A) 10 days
B) 12 days
C) 14 days
D) 15 days

D)
Consider the provided information.
A and B together can complete a work in 12 days.
A alone can complete it in 20 days.
First find the LCM of 12 and 20.
12 = 2×2×3
20 = 2×2×5
LCM of 12 and 20 is 2×2×3×5=60
A and B together can complete a work in 12 days. If there are 60 units and A and B
can make them in 12 days, that means they are making (60/12) = 5 units per day. A
can make 60 units it in 20 days, that means A can make units per day. Together they
are making 5 units where A alone can make 3 units that means B alone can make 2
units per day. In half day B can make 1 unit. Total units made in 1 day if b does the
work only for half a day daily, is 3+1=4.Therefore, the number of days to complete the
work is(60/4) = 15 days. Hence, it would take 15 days to complete the work.

Question 12
Abhishek starts to paint a fence on one day. On the second day, two more
friend of Abhishek join him. On the third day 3 more friends of him join him and
so on. If the fence is completely painted this way in exactly 20 days, then find
the number of days in which 10 girls painting together can paint the fence
completely, given that every girl can paint twice as fast as Abhishek and his
friends(Boys)?(Assume that the friends of Abhishek are all boys).

A) 20
B) 40
C) 45
D) 77

Option(D) is correct

Let us first consider a general series,

=[1+(1+2)+(1+2+3)+.....+(1+2+3+....+n)]
Sum of above series for n terms,
=(n(n+1)(n+2))/6
⇒ The number of boys-days
=(1/6)[1+(1+2)+(1+2+3)+.....+(1+2+3+....+20)]
=(20×21×22)/6
=1540
⇒ But, each boy =1/2 girls ⇒770 girl-days.
⇒ 10 girls will take 770/10=77 days.

14
Question 13
A is 50% as efficient as B. C does half the work done by A and B together.
If C alone does the work in 40 days, then A, B and C together can do the
work in how many days?

A) 11 1/3 days
B) 13 1/3 days
C) 12 1/3 days
D) 15 1/3 days

Question 14
X and Y can do a piece of work in 20 days and 12 days respectively. X
started the work alone and then after 4 days Y joined him till the
completion of work. How long did the work last?

A) 5 days
B) 6 days
C) 7 days
D) 8 days

Option B)
X can complete work in days = 20
X 's 1 day work = 1/20
Y can complete work in days = 12
Y's 1 day work = 1/12
(X+Y)'s 1 day work = (1/20) + (1/12) = 2/15
X 's 4 days work = 4/20
Remaining work = 1 – (4/20) = 16/20
(X+Y) can complete work together in days = 15/2
(X+Y) can complete 16/ 20 work together in days = (15/2) * (16/20) = 6
The work lasts for 6 days
