2. An aero plane flying at 300 km/hr turns left and completes a quarter [10]
circle of 70 m radius. The mass of the rotary engine and the
propeller of the plane amounts to 500 kg with a radius of gyration
of 340 mm. The engine speed is 2200 rpm anti clockwise when
viewed from the rear. Determine the gyroscopic couple on the
aircraft and state its effect. In what way the effect is changed when the aero
plane turns towards right.

3. The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 3500 kg. It has a radius of gyration of [10]
0.45m and a speed of 3000 rpm clockwise when looking from stern. Determine
the gyroscopic couple and its effect upon the ship.
(i) when the ship is steering to the left on a curve of 100 m radius at a
speed of 36 km/h.
(ii) when the ship is pitching in a simple harmonic motion, the bow falling
with its maximum velocity. The period of pitching is 40 seconds and the
total angular displacement between the two extreme positions of pitching

4. A four-bar mechanism shown in Figure 1 is acted upon by a force P of 100 N at [10]
GR11D5104 1200 on the link CD. Dimensions of the various links are: AB = 40 mm, BC = 60
mm, CD = 50 mm, AD = 30 mm, and DE = 20 mm. Determine the input torque
on AB for static equilibrium. (Figure is not to scale)

5. A horizontal gas engine running at 210 rpm has bore of 220 mm and a stroke of [10]
440 mm . the connecting rod is 924 mm long and the reciprocating parts weigh
20kg. When the crank has turned through an angle of 30˚ from the inner dead
centre, the gas pressure on the cover and the crank sides are 500 KN/m2 and 60
KN/m2 respectively. diameter of the piston rod is 40mm. Determine 1) Turning
moment on the crank shaft 2) thrust on the bearings.
6. The lengths of the upper and lower arms of a porter governor are
200 mm and 250 mm respectively. Both arms are pivoted on the
axis of rotation. The weight of each ball is 30 N, the central load on the sleeve is
225 N and the friction of the sleeve together with
[10]
the resistance of the operating gear is equivalent to a force of 45 N
at the sleeve. If the limiting inclination of the upper arms to the
vertical are 30o and 40o, determine the range of the speed of the
governor.

7. Explain with neat sketches the Transmission type Dynamometers . [10]
8. A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C and D in this order along its [10]
axis. Mass A is assumed to be concentrated at a radius of 18cm, B at 24cm, C
at 12cm and D at 15cm. The masses of B, C and D are 30kg, 50kg and 40kg
respectively. The planes containing B and C are 30cm apart, the angular
spacing of planes containing C and D are 90o and 210o respectively relative to
B measured in the same plane. If the shaft and masses are in complete
balance, find the mass and angular position of mass A and the positions of
planes A and D.

9. An inside cylinder locomotive has its cylinder centre lines 0.7 m [10]
GR11D5104 apart and has a stroke of 0.6 m. The rotating masses per cylinder
GR11D5104 are equivalent to 180 kg. The wheel centre lines are 1.5 m apart.
GR11D5104 The cranks are at right angles. The whole of the rotating and 3/4 of
the reciprocating masses are to be balanced by masses placed at
radius of 0.6 m. Find the magnitude and direction of the balancing
